Reunion Island has announced the abolition of a visa for travelers from China and India.
“The development of the tourism industry in the Indian Ocean, and in Reunion Island, in particular, was always slowed down by the problem of visas,” Pascal Viroleau, Chief Executive Officer of the Vanilla Islands Tourism Organization, said. “For several years, the abolition of visa for tourists has been the brainchild of Senator Jacqueline Farreyrol.”
According to Viroleau, a first stage was crossed some months ago when visa was waived for the South African citizens, but it is only now that the waiver has been extended for Chinese and Indian visitors to Reunion Island.
This development comes is the result of the collaboration among the services of the Prefecture of Reunion, the tourism trade and at instigation of the Vanilla Islands Tourism Organization and its president, Didier Robert, added Viroleau.
He added: “Indeed, the ministerial decree of June 27th, 2014 answered the expectations of the whole sector, raising finally an institutional obstacle to the tourist development.”
The Vanilla Islands Tourism Organization expresses its thanks to the French government for its decision and for its support for the tourism development of the Indian Ocean. As well, to Senator Farreyrol for spearheading this change in tourism policy,” Viroleau closed.
It is henceforth up to the private sector to appropriate this victory and to transform it into tourist arrivals.
