Delta Air Lines reported it had lifted a ground stop the airline had imposed on all domestic flights on Tuesday night.

Delta Air Lines reported it had lifted a ground stop that the airline had imposed on all domestic flights on Tuesday night due to a technical issue.

The airline said it had experienced an online outage that resulted in a nationwide ground stop, which means all flights have to remain on the ground. According to Delta, international flights were not affected.

The airline issued a statement saying: “There was no disruption or safety impact on any Delta flights in the air.” None of the statements indicated what the specific technology issue was, and the airline statement said its IT teams worked diligently to resolve the issue impacting some of their systems.

It is not known how many flights were affected by the ground stop.

City officials shut own the US$2.2 billion San Francisco transit terminal today after a crack was found in a support beam.

The new San Francisco Transbay Transit Center terminal became a short-lived tourist attraction as visitors stopped to take photos of a cracked steel beam in the new center.

City officials shut own the US$2.2 billion transit terminal today, September 25, 2018, after the crack was found in a support beam under the center’s public roof garden. Officials said the transit center will remain closed while engineers assess the damage and inspect other beams.

Coined the “Grand Central of the West,” the Salesforce Transit Center opened in August near the heart of downtown after nearly a decade of construction. It was expected to accommodate 100,000 passengers each weekday, and up to 45 million people a year.

Authorities in green vests immediately began moving people out of the building this afternoon and rerouted buses to a temporary area about two blocks away that had been used during the center’s construction.

Enveloped in wavy white sheets of metal veil, the five-level center includes a bus deck, a towering sky-lit central entrance hall, and a rooftop park with an outdoor amphitheater.

The terminal is managed by the Transbay Joints Power Authority. Executive director Mark Zabaneh said no other damage is suspected.

Tanzania Airport Authority introduced a security levy imposed to passengers boarding aircraft at major domestic and international airports.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

The Tanzania Airport Authority has introduced a security levy imposed to passengers boarding aircraft at major domestic and international airports across territorial boundaries of Tanzania, and it is likely to also affect foreign tourists booked to visit this African destination.

The new fee will be used for improvement of airport security through installation of high-tech equipment and safety services including perimeter fences and state-of-the-art scanning machines to improve detection capacity and reduce intrusive direct-body searches on travelers.

Expected to be effected on October 1 of this year, the security levy will affect both foreign and domestic travelers booked with airlines flying inside and outside Tanzania.

Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) Director General Richard Mayongela said that foreign travelers boarding aircraft at major airports in Tanzania will pay US$5 while those boarding domestic flights will pay a US$2 security fee on top of the flight ticket price.

He said that the security levy will be charged from October 1 of this year and will affect all passengers booked to fly through Tanzania airports, mostly the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam which handles most passengers flying international and domestic destinations.

“We have introduced [a] security levy whose purpose is targeted to enhance development of airports infrastructure, also to stabilize and strengthen … safety of our airports as to make them gain international status in terms of safety and quality,” Mayongela said.

Major international airlines to be affected with this new levy setup are KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Kenya Airways, South Africa Airways, Emirates, Qatar Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Swiss International, Fly Dubai, Rwanda Air, and Etihad.

Local airlines to feel the effect of the new charges are Precision Air, FastJet, Air Tanzania, Coastal Aviation, and Auric Air, all operating frequent domestic flights within Tanzania and partly in East Africa.

The current departure tax for domestic flights is US$5.70 while the international departure tax is US$49 per passenger boarding a flight.

Airlines operating in Tanzania fear that the new levy will make air transport in this African nation be expensive enough to scare away travelers looking to book both local and international flights.

A KLM Royal Dutch Airlines official in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Alexander Van de Wint, had suggested that the Tanzania government could set the security levy to be imposed at the start of next year, as most of KLM’s tickets have been sold in advance to respective passengers traveling up to the end of this year.

KLM is the only European-registered air carrier connecting Tanzania with North American cities. Most of KLM seats are booked by tourists from the United States and Europe. The airline operates daily flights between Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Leading airline executives in Dar es Salaam had expressed their fear, saying that the newly-imposed security levy will make air transport in Tanzania too expensive, noting that several taxes and fees are currently charged to passengers using Tanzanian airports.

Tourism will be the most affected sector by the newly-imposed security fees. The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sirili Akko, said the newly-introduced security fees could scare away tourists planning to visit Tanzania.

“This move is not welcomed, as it works against Tanzania Government’s goal of increasing tourist traffic and will have a compounding effect on ticket cost and ultimately on the safari packages,” Akko said.

Akko added that the current request from private sector targets is to reduce taxes and levies, if not abolish them altogether.

There have been fees, levies, and taxes on auxiliary services to tourism packages which the association had raised its deep concerns about.

TATO is an umbrella organization registered with more than 400 tour operators and other tourist business stakeholders. The association is now leading to market Destination Tanzania in the world.

Tourism is Tanzania’s leading foreign currency earning sector and key economic sector, but the current government had targeted industries as priority in the economic sector.

Business tourism is on the rise across the Middle East, and it is an exciting time for the meetings MICE industry.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

The Exhibition Director of Middle East IBTM Arabia, Danielle Curtis, shared insights on the future trends and technology in the Middle East Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE) industry.

Like many new markets, the Middle East and North Africa has its own characteristics, requirements and dynamics when it comes to meetings, conferences and business events. This is a young market, with a transient and moving population, where there is high demand for education and learning products. The online learning environment is a big seller, but the culture here is very much about personal relationships, so face to face interaction is important for business.

Evolving opportunities

Countries in this region have traditionally relied on oil for a large portion of their income, but with prices in that sector on a long-term low, several are now re-focusing their economies on business; increasing tourism is also a significant target. Strategies such as Dubai’s Tourism Vision 2020, Egypt’s Refreshed Tourism Strategy 2013-2020, Morocco’s Vision 2020, The Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and Saudi Vision 2030 are examples of national strategies aimed at developing the country’s economy across a wide range of industries including technology, healthcare, tourism, education and finance. Jordan and Oman are pursuing similar goals – business tourism is on the rise across the Middle East. It’s an exciting time and the MICE industry is rapidly becoming a leading priority for governments in the entire MENA region.

Building connections

The strategy is working. Ever since the opening of the Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau in 2013, the UAE capital has established itself as a leading business events destination. Abu Dhabi Airport is the world’s fastest growing hub, registering growth in connectivity of 1,479 per cent between 2007 and 2017, according to the Airport Industry Connectivity Report 2017, published by Airports Councils International (ACI). A new fourth terminal of the airport is currently under construction and due to open in late 2019. While the existing Abu Dhabi International Airport handles around 26 million passengers each year, the additional terminal will increase the airport’s capacity by an additional 30 million travelers annually. This is a testament to the UAE capital’s rise as a major leisure and business tourism destination, with some of the world’s fastest growing hubs in the Middle East.

New regions open for MICE business

Across the Middle East we see evidence that the region is gearing up for events business. Saudi Arabia is experiencing sweeping change across all aspects of life from entertainment to the economy and a major part of the country’s strategy is to become a powerhouse in meetings and events. The country is investing in road, rail and air infrastructure and will open over 50 new four and five-star hotels in the next four years, creating 11,000 bedrooms. State-of-the-art event facilities are also on the way.

Saudi is not alone. Growth in business tourism in Morocco has been supported by the development of several economic clusters, including Casa Nearshore for ICT, Midpark for aeronautics and Casablanca Finance City for capital markets. These developments have helped maintain a healthy demand for increases in hotel capacity. Additionally, in light of Casablanca’s shortage of large-scale event facilities, the city has been making substantial investments to grow its attractiveness as a MICE destination in recent years. A new 3,500-seat congress centre has been built on the city’s marina and an 1,800-seat event room forms part of Casablanca’s first opera house – the newly opened CasArts Theatre Complex.

In Dubai, the 20,000 capacity Dubai Arena will open in 2019 and will be the largest of its kind in the region. A multi-purpose arena spanning half a million square feet, this new space will greatly enhance Dubai’s leisure and entertainment offering. The state-of-the-art venue will make the most of the latest advancements in venue design and will feature automated malleable seats, allowing it to transform depending on the size of event.

Leaving a legacy

Also in Dubai, preparations are well under way for the next World Expo – Expo 2020 Dubai. Intense efforts are being made to ensure the landmark event leaves a meaningful, long-lasting and multi-layered impact way beyond this futuristic city. Leisure and business tourism are expected to skyrocket during the six months of the event, with up to 25 million visitors attending – 70% from outside the UAE. With a plan focused on providing a lasting framework for the city’s MICE sector, the industry is set to benefit from the sleek and ultra-modern event spaces being added to the expo site.

Expo 2020 Dubai will be a showcase of new innovations and technologies of all kinds and, of course, technology is vital to the success of events and meetings and it’s at the heart of the evolution taking place across the Middle East’s emergence as a business events hub. Technology is being used to make existing processes better, adding-value and efficiencies to enhance the event experience.

Technology to watch

Once piece of tech that is really changing the game here is facial recognition. Houston based Zenus Biometrics has created facial recognition technology that enables you to begin impressing attendees the moment they enter your event. The company’s API integrates with event registration partners, to create a frictionless entry process that takes just seven seconds. Entry for attendees is efficient, quick and non-evasive, while the planner reduces queues with easy entry and adds an extra layer of security. All data collected is deleted immediately after the event.

Guest management software, such as Concierge.com is also popular. Concierge includes services from registration options to itinerary building tools and in-app smart systems for managing travel arrangements. It also enables users to send messages to different groups of attendees, allowing the segmentation and targeting of different groups.

Measurable event sponsorship ROI is another new tech set to make inroads in the region. Bright Box has created a phone charging station that can carry branding for sponsorship purposes. The beauty of the device is that it has a camera that can track how many people pass by. Now you can put figures on your promise to provide exposure.

As an up and coming region in the world of business events, it makes sense for MENA to embrace the latest technologies and events trends – as technology continues to impact every aspect of our industry, it’s essential that we embrace and understand the potential implications the lie ahead.

Proposed restrictions on short-term rentals are accompanied by a half-million-dollar ad campaign funded by the big hotel chains.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

A newly-proposed ordinance would decimate the US Capitol’s robust short-term rental market, depriving home-owners of their property rights and hurting neighborhood restaurants and small businesses that benefit from short-term rentals in the District of Columbia (DC).

The proposed restrictions on short-term rentals, to be released later today, are accompanied by a half-million-dollar ad campaign funded by the big hotel chains – who want to eliminate competition from short-term rentals. LaSalle Hotel Properties’s CEO told investors that a law curtailing short-term rental services would allow hotels to boost their room rates.

“Washington DC already gives millions in tax breaks to big hotels, and Council should not give hotels another handout by curtailing the property rights of District home owners,” said Carl Szabo, General Counsel of NetChoice.

Short-term rentals provide much-needed income to hundreds of DC residents. Over 52 percent of short-term rental hosts nationwide live in low-to-moderate income households. And almost half of the income hosts earn through short-term rentals helps them cover household expenses. Moreover, there are hundreds of local restaurants, shops, and cleaning services that benefit from the activity of short-term rentals.

“This legislation has been marred by misinformation and process problems and should not be rammed through in the closing days of this year’s final Council session. This issue deserves a robust public discussion and economic impact analysis,” continued Szabo.

“This bill will harm thousands of DC residents who rely on short-term rentals, not just home owners, but small businesses that benefit from the economic boost created by short term renting.”

Argentina citizens reining in their appetite to travel as shown in flight bookings for last 4 months of the year just 1% ahead of last year.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

In the aftermath of debt crisis in Argentina, travel within South America appears to be stalling, as Argentines rein in their appetite to travel.

In the first eight months of 2018, international flight arrivals in South America were 6% up on the first eight months of 2017, as reported by research undertaken by ForwardKeys, which analyzes over 17 million flight booking transactions a day. However, flight bookings for the last four months of the year are currently just 1% ahead of where they were at the same point in 2017.

Current international bookings for trips to Brazil, South America’s largest destination, during the September – December period, are currently 8% ahead of where they were at this point in 2017, which sounds encouraging, but that is against a period of 12% growth in international visitor arrivals for the year to the end of August. By comparison, Colombia, Peru and Chile all appear to be suffering setbacks, with inbound flight bookings all running behind where they were at the same point last year.

A major factor has been outbound travel from Argentina, which collapsed following the dive of the Argentine peso. Travel to Brazil was 31% up from January to April, but the peso hitting a low on 3 May devastated the outbound market for the next three months. As of 31 August, Argentinean flight bookings to Brazil for May to December are 1% down compared to same period last year.

Travel from Argentina to Chile has also suffered badly. At the start of the year, Jan-Apr, arrivals were 2% up on the same period in 2017. However, current bookings for the last four months of the year are 52% behind. This collapse in one of Chile’s most important source markets has transformed a 9% positive overall performance in the first four months of 2018 to a 9% negative outlook for the last four months of 2018.

Argentina-aside, the outlook for South America’s biggest market, Brazil, is encouraging. Current bookings for the last four months of the year from all the other major source markets are ahead, some impressively, such as Chile (+28%), France (+15%) and Spain (+15%). The most impressive percentage uplifts come from: Bolivia (+41%) South Africa (+36%), Canada (+26%), Japan (+23%), Paraguay (+19%) and Colombia (+15%).

Current bookings for September to December, from the most important long-haul origin markets to South America are generally well ahead of 2017. Those from Canada are 12% ahead, from Germany 9% ahead, from France and Japan 8% ahead and from the UK 7% ahead. The outlook from these five source markets is particularly encouraging for Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Olivier Jager, CEO, ForwardKeys, said: “The Argentine debt crisis has played a very influential role in South American travel trends. With the collapse in the value of the peso, it immediately became much more expensive for Argentinians to travel abroad and local destinations such a Chile and Brazil suffered dramatic declines in visitors from Argentina. However, at the same time, Argentina, and by extension South America, became more attractive to lower-volume but higher-value long-haul markets.”

The winners are chosen by industry professionals, who evaluate the nominees for their infrastructure, quality of services, innovation in experiences and number of visitors.

“Barceló Hotel Group is immensely honored that Occidental Cozumel was recognized this year with a nomination from the World Travel Awards,” said Juan Perez Sosa, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing in the United States for Barceló Hotel Group. “The WTA brand is the ultimate hallmark of global excellence, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.”

There are countless reasons for Cozumel to have been named the World Travel Awards’ Best Island and Destination in Mexico and Central America this year. Just a few of them include:

 • “Smart Destination” – Over the past three years, Cozumel has been transformed into a “Smart Destination,” including massive overhauls in the realms of accessibility, innovation, sustainability and technology.
 • Sustainability – Cozumel is committed to becoming one of the world’s leading sustainable destinations and balance visitor growth while protecting its natural resources and cultural heritage at the same time. Best known for having the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the destination takes great pride in its efforts to ensure the protection and conservation of the ocean and coral reefs.
 • Best Beaches – Cozumel is home to some of the most gorgeous stretches of sand in Mexico, offering travelers an array of options fun under the sun, including snorkeling, diving, kayaking and much more. The destination’s beaches have something for everyone, whether you’re looking for gentle waves and family friendly activities or off-the-beaten-path coves that offer romantic backdrops. Additionally, Cozumel has also been fortunate to largely avoid environmental impact from deposits of seaweed washing up on Mexican beaches, allowing visitors to enjoy the island’s magnificent beaches with no restrictions or concerns.
 • Easy Accessibility – With several airlines providing affordable nonstop direct flights from major U.S. cities to Cozumel and Cancun, the island is one of the most easily accessible vacation getaways in Mexico. The island is also a top cruise destination in the western Caribbean and Mayan Riviera.

Two great options to stay at in Cozumel at different price points are Occidental Cozumel and Allegro Cozumel. Additional details on these hotels below:

 • Occidental Cozumel: With rates starting at $152, the all-inclusive Occidental Cozumel is a perfect complement to the natural landscape of the island, surrounded by mangroves, white sand beaches and tropical gardens. During their visit, guests can learn how to make fresh guacamole and habanero margaritas, take a yoga class, kayak, sail or lounge by the Caribbean Sea. Set along the Palancar Reef, the resort offers multiple packages for scuba diving enthusiasts, including courses and night dive experiences – all of which can be booked through the resort’s unique Dive Concierge.
 • Allegro Cozumel: The all-inclusive Allegro Cozumel starting at $129 per night offers guests convenient access to two worlds of adventure: the spectacular Playa San Francisco – one of Mexico’s most beautiful stretches of sand – and the stunning scuba divers’ paradise Palancar Reef. Book the resort’s Ultimate Dive Experience, which includes accommodations close to the water, access to an exclusive lounge, and – most importantly – one free single tank boat dive per day with Pro Dive Mexico.

“Cooperation between Moscow and Tokyo. was on the agenda of the just concluded Tourism Expo in Tokyo, Japan.

A speech about the tourists from Japan and the potential of tourism of Moscow was given by Alexey Tikhnenko, the head of the hotel management department of the Department of Sport and Tourism of Moscow.

In the first two-quarters of 2018 more than 40 000 citizens of Japan visited the capital of Russia. One-third of them arrived as tourists, who also came to see the FIFA World Cup. Japanese fans won Moscow people’s hearts not only by their flamboyant, colorful costumes, but also by their love for cleanness – they didn’t start celebrating the playoff exit of their team until they cleaned up their places on the bleachers. By the end of 2017 more than 60 000 Japanese people visited the capital of Russia.

“Every year we see the growth of tourists arriving in Moscow. In 2017 there were 21.6 million of tourist arrivals in Moscow, by the end of 2018 we expect the growth of the tourist flow by at least 10%. We have created a modern infrastructure so that the guests of the capital could feel comfortable and safe here”, said Alexey Tikhnenko, the head of the hotel management department of the Department of Sport and Tourism of Moscow.

Moscow is the biggest cultural center in the world. Every year more than 500 recreational and cultural events take place here. There are more than 270 functioning museums and 170 functioning theaters in the city. One-third of Moscow is covered by park areas. In 2017 a new park “Zaradye” was opened in the very center of the capital, it was included by the “Times” magazine in the list of the best places in the world 2018.

Today there are 1560 classified accommodation facilities in Moscow: hotels, hostels. The room prices start at $15. The transport infrastructure is widely developed – a tourist can choose the way of transportation convenient for him. There is Wi-Fi in the public places. The city pays considerable attention to the safety measures – there are more than 184 000 surveillance cameras around the city”

There is a special service CITY PASS in Moscow, which lets you visit museums, restaurants, sports centers and use the public transport for free.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism & Wildlife, Hon. Najib Balala, EGH, says it will use Africa’s leading hotel investment forum – AHIF – as a launch pad for innovative tourism investment opportunities, as the Ministry aims to boost the country’s thriving tourism sector.

The Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) takes place in Nairobi, next week, October 2-4, and will be attended by some of the highest calibre international investors and hotel executives of any conference in Africa.

As hosts, Kenya wants to use the platform for a series of ambitious new tourism ideas and projects, drawn up with business people from across the country and beyond.

Tourism Finance Corporation (TFC) provides affordable development funding and advisory services for long-term investment. TFC Managing Director Jonah T. Orumoisays his team has been holding one-to-one meetings to package up ideas to attract international finance and expertise.

Among the plans:

 • Opportunities for lodges & hotels within our National Parks and Game Reserves managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS)
 • Eco-lodges
 • Cable cars in Rift Valley
 • Amusement parks and water fun parks
 • Cruise boats for coastal and lake counties
 • Floating restaurants
 • Adrenaline pump activities such as zip lines

Mr. Orumoi said: “Kenya’s tourism sector recorded a double-digit rise in earnings in 2017 – 20.3 per cent growth. Hoteliers are eager to capitalise on this. The latest research by W Hospitalityreveals the country’s branded hotel chain pipeline is in Africa’s top ten, with 3,453 rooms under development spread over 19 hotels.

“During AHIF, we want to engage global investors on a wider spectrum of potential tourism investment opportunities in Kenya, to drive sector diversification and innovation.”

At meetings during AHIF, TFC will emphasise Kenya’s secure investment environment; good and serviceable infrastructure; simplified procedures for investment and business operations; good governance, and availability of market orientated skills.

Matthew Weihs, Managing Director of Bench Events which organises AHIF, said: “It’s impressive that Kenya is being so pro-active in the tourism sector. Not just in terms of ambition, but also aiding investment through TFC. We look forward to hearing more about its imaginative projects at AHIF.”

PATA is ready to assist affected destinations around the world as they look to quickly rebuild and recover their tourism industries.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

With the frequency and severity of natural disasters occurring around the world, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is ready to assist affected destinations around the world as they look to quickly rebuild and recover.

The PATA Recovery Advisory Group assists member destinations in identifying key challenges facing the sector and providing turnaround strategies during periods of sudden decline in tourism arrivals and earnings as a result of natural or man-made disasters.

“The effects of global warming have only increased the severity and frequency of devastating weather events around the world and we have already seen this take place in India, USA, Puerto Rico, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, and Macao, China, to name a few. As PATA has often talked about the responsible development of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region, it is our duty to provide assistance when needed,” said PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy. “The PATA Recovery Advisory Group provides an opportunity for destinations to tap into the expertise of our expansive network of members and industry colleagues and leverage their support as they look to recover quickly from incidents beyond their control.”

The members of the PATA Recovery Advisory Group are formed on a skill-based volunteering basis, leveraging the specialized experience and expertise of individual PATA members to spearhead recovery eff¬orts in the fields of marketing, branding and media, budgeting and financing, and safety and security.

Previous recovery efforts have been successful in such destinations as Nepal, after the devastating earthquake in April 2015, and in Bali, after the horrendous act of violence in 2002.

“Climate change is real and those that disagree are blind to events happening all around us, from frequent severe weather events happening around the globe to vanishing island nations in the Pacific. The travel and tourism industry must lead by example and many destinations and stakeholders have been taking steps in embracing practical measures to offset the potentially irreversible damage caused by climate change, such as the banning of single-use plastics, the reduction of food waste, and the use of renewable energies, to name a few,” added Dr. Hardy. “The PATA Recovery Advisory Group is in line with our activities on advocacy, human capital development and sustainability, but one which we would rather not have to call upon. Nevertheless, PATA will always continue to advocate responsible tourism development that benefits, rather than destroy, our communities.”
