Heathrow Airport has announced its investment in a unique project in UK aviation: the restoration of UK peatlands to offset carbon emissions. Working with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and DEFRA, Heathrow’s first restoration priority will be Little Woolden Moss, part of Chat Moss which is a larger area of peat bog land, west of Manchester, it has been subject to commercial peat extraction for over 15 years.

The restoration of the UK’s peatland bogs, forms part of Heathrow’s plans to be a carbon neutral airport by 2020. By supporting research into the climate benefits of peatland restoration, Heathrow hopes to show that projects like this will make a good option for airlines’ CORSIA commitments – an international agreement to deliver carbon neutral growth in aviation from 2020. This pilot project will also help explore opportunities for peatland to deliver cost effective carbon offsetting alongside a range of other benefits including biodiversity, water quality, and flood protection.

Heathrow’s aim is to operate zero carbon airport infrastructure by 2050, meaning that the day to day operation of the airport infrastructure results in no emissions of greenhouse gases. As part of the progress made against these plans, Heathrow has also announced that Terminal 2 is now powered by entirely renewable means: 124 solar panels on its roof, an on-site biomass boiler using locally sourced forestry waste and renewable gas and electricity supplies. With all of Heathrow running on 100% renewable electricity since April 2017, Heathrow is already nearly 80% towards its zero carbon airport goal.

Heathrow has invested more than £94,000 in Little Woolden Moss to restore 70 hectares of peatland that has up until now been used for extraction. According to DEFRA indicators, the restoration of this project area could lead to savings of 22,427 tonnes of CO2 over 30 years – equivalent to nearly 64,000 passenger journeys from Heathrow to New York. Following this initial pilot project, Heathrow plans to invest in more peatland restoration projects over the next two years, and the airport is already exploring other locations.

Taking the lead in restoring peatlands as carbon sinks is a long-term project announced in Heathrow 2.0, the airport’s sustainability strategy. The UK has seen a catastrophic loss of peatland habitat until today – with 94% of the country’s natural peatland either destroyed or damaged. Peatlands still represent the UK’s biggest store of carbon, and studies have revealed that if all the UK’s bogs were in favourable conditions they would have the potential to remove and assimilate an additional 3 million tonnes of carbon a year.1

Heathrow has recently signed up to the global Science Based Targets Initiative, pledging that it will align its emissions targets with the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees. The airport has also achieved the Level 2 Carbon Trust Supply Chain Standard, one of only 11 companies to be accredited and the first airport. The standard recognises Heathrow’s work with its suppliers to target year-on-year reductions in supply chain carbon emissions.

The restoration of Little Woolden Moss will take place over three years, and the restored site will continue to be publicly accessible for cycling, walks, and community events. The restoration will involve pumping water to the site, planting native plant species, and eventually allowing the area to fully restore its rich habitat and wildlife – including species like the common lizard, Black Darter Dragonfly, Brown Hare and the rare Bog Bush Cricket.

Heathrow Chief Executive John Holland-Kaye said:

“We are very excited to announce our partnership with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, and explore how UK peatlands can be used as a carbon offsetting tool. Climate change is the greatest challenge our generation is facing and while this is just the first of many projects, we hope it will be a model for the aviation industry to follow.”

Anne Selby, Chief Executive of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust said:

“The Trust has been working for over 30 years to restore these globally important habitats and fight for their protection. This has been made possible by the support of our key funders, members and local businesses who have supported our work for many years. We are pleased that Heathrow are joining them in protecting the future of our UK peatlands. Our wildlife is under threat and now is the time for us all to stand together to protect the future of our natural world; we must all be part of the solution”

Besides tackling emissions from its own buildings and infrastructure and investing in offsetting, Heathrow encourages airlines to use cleaner aircraft through landing charges, and through the “Fly Quiet and Green” League table, a public ranking of the best and the worst airline environmental performers. Heathrow is addressing carbon emissions from vehicles by instituting an airside ultra-low emission zone and by supporting public transport options into the airport, including the trebling of rail capacity by 2040.

While many in the hospitality industry are nervous about the increasing inventory of hotels in Dubai and the impact it continues to have on room rates, Ammar Kanaan, Group General Manager of Central Hotels, remains optimistic.

So, despite the challenges of mounting competition, how does Central Hotels plan to boost profitability has just added two new 5-star hotels to the portfolio namely the Canal Central Business Bay and Royal Central The Palm?

Ammar stressed, “It is no doubt a challenging period for hotels where the market is facing multiple issues. Rising cost of operations and increasing pressure on pricing due to an oversupply of rooms is adversely affecting the profitability of hotels. However, Dubai continues to make great strides in growth and diversification of tourism. On our part as operators, it is vital that we challenge ourselves as an industry to respond to the market conditions with strategic and innovative solutions. This will not only allow us to reduce our operating costs but will stimulate our business for long-term sustainability.”

According to Ammar, “To overcome challenges hotels need to take the right measures. At Central Hotels we have decided to outsource functions such as engineering, IT, house-keeping, security and F&B with highly reputed and reliable partners. This has resulted in a positive impact on our business as payroll is the largest cost center for any hotel operation. Moreover, in addition to reducing costs outsourcing also allows us to elevate the quality of service for our guests with specialized companies giving us a competitive edge.”

Bali Travel: The new pride of Indonesia is taller than the Statue of Liberty. A tourist attraction, a national symbol of greatness and unity, a giant conference venue and a landmark of Bali.

Travel News | eTurboNews

]]>

It was a great weekend not only for the Bali Travel and Tourism Industry. The new pride of Indonesia is taller than the Statue of Liberty. A tourist attraction, a national symbol of greatness and unity, a giant conference and meeting venue and without argument the new number one landmark of Bali visible to anyone with a window seat when landing at DenPasar International Airport in Bali.

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument (GWK) is now the second largest statue in the world, a new landmark of Bali and Indonesia, a meeting venue of 7000+ and a major tourist attraction on Bali. It was officially opened on Saturday after completion earlier in August last month

A proud Indonesian President Joko Widodo opened the 121-meter-tall Garuda Wisnu Kencana Monument (GWK) at Ungusan, South Bali. It took 28 years to complete.

Initiated in 1990 jointly by former Tourism Minister Joop Ave and Indonesia’s maestro sculptor I Nyoman Nuarta, supported by then Bali Governor Ida Bagus Oka, and Ida Bagus Sudjana Minister for Energy and Mining some 28 years ago, construction of the statue has been able to surpass numerous challenges until reaching this crucial stage today.

Standing 120 meters above ground, or 276 meters above sea level, the imposing Garuda Wisnu statue is built so that it can be seen by all passengers from the plane when it makes its slow descent towards the Ngurah Rai International Airport, giving a warm welcome to Bali and Indonesia, and a lasting memory of a wonderful stay here.

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana (or GWK for short) will be the second tallest statue in the world, after the Spring Temple Buddha in Hainan, China, which is 153 meters high. GWK is taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York and Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro. The 75 meters high statue stands on a 45 meters platform, while the entire span of the Garuda bird stretches 64 meters.

Weighing no less than 4,000 tons, GWK is made of copper, brass, and steel and stands in a 240 hectares plot of land next to a refreshing waterfall that has its source at a nearby spring.

GWK itself is constructed of 754 separate modules which were created at Nuarta’s studio in Bandung, West Java, then transported to Bali, where each module was meticulously set and attached at their proper places. Its planning and construction were designed with digital calculations taking into account its weight, structure, and wind strength.

It is calculated to withstand an earthquake of 8 on the Richter Scale, said Nuarta. Total investments came to Rp. 450 billion of private sector funding and contributions. When construction stalled due to the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997, the project was later taken over and managed by PT Garuda Adhinata Indonesia of the Alam Sutera Real Estate.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana is a Symbol of Peace, Serenity and National Unity. In his state of meditation Lord Wisnu with eyes half closed emits an aura of total peace and serenity, riding on the shoulder of the great fierce-looking Garuda bird, whose eyes look out ever watchful.

The Hindu Balinese believe that Lord Wisnu (elsewhere known as Vishnu), is the Preserver and Protector of the universe who fights destructive forces when these threaten to escalate into chaos, and Wisnu comes to restore cosmic balance. The mythical bird Garuda, on the other hand, symbolizes speed, force, and martial prowess.

In Indonesia, moreover, Garuda is enshrined as Indonesia’s National emblem, known as Garuda Pancasila, on whose body are etched the Pancasila or the 5 Principles of State, with its claws carrying the banner Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, meaning Unity in Diversity. Indonesia’s state-owned airline has also taken Garuda Indonesia as its logo.

The park has a land area of about 60 hectares In the same area there is also a Statue of Garuda which is directly behind the Plaza Wisnu is Garuda Plaza where the statue as high as 18 meters Garuda was placed temporarily.

In July 2013 this publication reported about this at that time 16-year-old project. Work was interrupted and restarted after local issues. Click here to read eTN’s Article from 2013

The Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue, therefore, will not only be an icon of the paradisical island of Bali, but its Garuda also symbolizes Indonesia’s national unity in its multiple diversity.

Assumption island will officially become a clearance port for visiting vessels intending to cruise the outer islands of Seychelles after the Cabinet of Ministers endorsed the plan.

Travel News | eTurboNews

Assumption island will officially become a clearance port for visiting vessels intending to cruise the outer islands of Seychelles after the Cabinet of Ministers endorsed the plan.

For two years, a trial project was being carried out to see the feasibility of making Assumption a clearance port. The Seychelles Cabinet of Ministers voted to make the situation permanent.

Assumption, which is situated some 1,140 southwest of the Seychelles’ main island of Mahe, is part of the Aldabra group and is managed by the Islands Development Company (IDC).

“Officers from the Ministry of Health, the immigration’s department, the National Biosecurity Agency, custom and police officers are flown to Assumption, where they board the vessel to carry out their respective clearance procedures,” said Joachim Valmont, the director general of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA).

No physical port was built to accommodate these activities. During clearance, officers check the reason why the vessel is in Seychelles’ waters and who and what is onboard.

Valmont added that when boarding the vessels these officers are accompanied by at least two armed security guards, who later stay onboard the vessel while it cruises in the waters of Seychelles.

At the time when piracy was at a peak in the Indian Ocean, it was agreed by The High-Level Committee in Piracy, that every vessel in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Seychelles should have armed security guards onboard. With the decline in piracy, the level has been reduced to at least two, regardless of the size of the vessel.

The 115 islands of Seychelles in the western Indian Ocean have a total land area of 455 square kilometres spread over an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.37 million square kilometres.

The outer islands which consist of Aldabra group, Farquhar group, Alphonse group, the Southern Coral group and the Amirante Islands, are popular among tourist on island hopping.

Officers going to Assumption are flown in on flights lasting between two and a half to three hours.

During the debriefing of the Cabinet Meeting to the press on Thursday, the Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Institutional Affairs, Johny Bastienne, said that transportation cost for the officers is covered by the vessel needing clearance.

“A cruise ship can be charged around $22,100 for the service,” said Bastienne.

The Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Policy Affairs, Margaret Pillay, who was also present during the press debriefing, said that these vessels do not have to come to Port Victoria for clearance if they do not have any business in the port.

“Before there was an agreement with Zanzibar, where these vessels were receiving clearance. This presented several security issues as clearance was being done outside of Seychelles and we did not know what was happening between Zanzibar and Seychelles,” said Pillay.

Right on time for the Seychelles Tourism Festival, Edelweiss airline has landed its inaugural flight to Seychelles from Switzerland. Another direct non-stop flight from Europe is indeed good news for the islands. The call by the Minister responsible for Finance as he welcomed the airline was for Seychelles to now work with the airline to ensure a win-win for the airline and for Seychelles.

At the same time first edition of the Seychelles Tourism Festival closed last Saturday with the annual Tourism Ball held at the Avani Seychelles Barbarons Beach Resort & Spa. After culinary events on Mahe this weekend it was the turn of Praslin and La Digue islands to stage their food fiesta events which saw visitors and the islanders come together to discover an assortment of local Seychellois specialities.

Sybille Cardon, the Chairperson of the Seychelles Hospitality & Tourism Association (SHTA), and a hotelier on Praslin Island said that the festival was a success and appealed for the event to be staged annually.

The 2018 edition of the Seychelles Tourism Festival closed with the island’s annual Tourism Ball where Sherin Francis, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board used the opportunity to discuss the successes of the industry and analyse the challenges they faced.

Joburg Tourism is marking Tourism Month this year by unveiling not only the new Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in Nelson Mandela Square, but also an updated, fresh website and a mobi-app.

The Tourism Unit within the Department of Economic Development’s strategic objective is to promote Johannesburg towards being the number one African destination of choice for both business and leisure in an effort to:

  • Improve seasonality, length of stay and tourist spend during visits to Joburg.
  • Improve the diversity of the tourism offering in Joburg.
  • Build a positive image / perception for the city among local, national and international audiences.

“In line with the prioritisation of achieving increased visitor arrivals in the city and contributing towards the economic growth target of 5% by 2021, Joburg Tourism seeks ways of increasing its presence and footprint throughout Gauteng, at various strategic locations, which includes Nelson Mandela Square.

The new VIC is situated in the heart of Sandton, Africa’s most iconic square mile, and ideally placed for both business and leisure travellers, who are key to contributing towards growth targets outlined by the City’s administration.

“According to the Liberty Group report (Two Degree, released on 06/09/2017), Sandton has an annual average foot traffic in excess of 24 million, hence it serves as the perfect location for the new VIC,” says Cllr Leah Knott, MMC for Economic Development at the City of Johannesburg. Joburg Tourism also currently operates a satellite VIC at Park Station.

Thus far, Joburg Tourism`s operations are guided by the City’s 10 Priority Implementation Plans (PIPs). The Tourism department contributes significantly to two of them, namely: 5% Economic Growth and Job Creation – reducing unemployment to under 20% by 2021.

The launch of the VIC is also an opportune time to unveil the upgraded, interactive Joburg Tourism website and the new Mobile App – which also present opportunities for tourism-related businesses (SMMEs) to list or verify their details and benefit from the exposure the site will provide and other related marketing initiatives.

About Tourism Month

The Sandton VIC and website launch has been chosen to coincide with Tourism Month,

which takes place from 1 – 30 September annually, with the highlight being UNWTO World Tourism Day, celebrated globally every year on 27 September.

World Tourism Day was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in 1980. This particular date was selected as it was on this day that the laws of the UNWTO came into force in 1970. This is considered as a major landmark for the global tourism industry, as it aims to make people aware about the significant role of tourism in the international community – as well as illustrating how it impacts social, economic, cultural and political values.

United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has declared the 2018 theme as “Digital Transformation and Tourism”. In this spirit, for World Tourism Day 2018, the theme needs to find local interpretation and translation in our 2018 activities, projects and stakeholder engagements, as well as the celebration of World Tourism Day.

Joburg Tourism Website and Mobi App Overview

One of Joburg Tourism’s core mandates is to provide online tourism information, along with online SMME and association support. In order to embrace international technological trends and to remain competitive in the digital sphere, Joburg Tourism has developed a mobile app, while also redeveloping its website to be more user friendly, appealing and to make it mobi-friendly. The website will be launching as www.visit.joburg

A new Guinness World Records™ title was set yesterday by Betty Crocker, the leading brand of dessert mixes from General Mills for baking the Largest mug cake mosaic in collaboration with Panda Retail Company, for Saudi Arabia’s 88thNational Day,

The bake-off for the new Guinness World Records title for the Largest mugcake mosaic was unveiled yesterday at Al Andalus Mall in Jeddah, measuring 112 square-meters with approximately 19,600 Betty Crocker mug cakes. It took 30 bakers almost 8 hours to create the marvelous cake and decorate it by 1900 Betty Crocker cake frosting tubs that represented the Saudi 88th National Day design on top of it before Guinness World Records adjudicator, Ahmed Jamal Jaber, officially confirmed it as the Largest mug cakemosaic ever.

“We are proud to be able to garner a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the 2nd year consecutively, and we would like to congratulate the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques His Majesty King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and all the people of Saudi on their 88th National Day. The idea of baking the Largest mug cake mosaic marks our appreciation and admiration to the remarkable achievements of the Saudi nation as we are strongly committed to support the dreams and ambitions of the Saudi Youth,” said Ali Shaikh, Commercial Director General Mills in the Middle East.

To conform with Guinness World Records guidelines, the Largest mug cake mosaic had to meet specific requirements set by the organization. The mosaic had to measure 112 square meters or above in order to break the Guinness World Records title. The event was attended by General Mills and Panda executives, as well as by Guinness World Records officials.

Mr. Hosam Alqurashi, Chief Commercial Officer of Panda said: “It was a great pleasure to us to be able to celebrate this precious occasion of the 88th Saudi National day, with one of our special partners. We would like to felicitate the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques His Majesty King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and all citizens and residents of Saudi Arabia, wishing them immense success and prosperity. This also coincides with our celebration of Panda’s 40th anniversary as the leading Saudi retailer in the region. We also would like to acknowledge Betty Crocker’s contribution to celebrate the kingdom’s grand occasion wishing them more success for the years to come.”

After the record was confirmed, the cake was distributed to visitors at Al Andalus Mall and also was delivered to a non-profit organization “Saudi Food Bank” to spread joy and create some festivity for all.

It deserved an impressive indulgence as a contribution to the local community to rejoice this splendid occasion.

Betty Crocker prides itself on redefining simplicity and ease of baking world renowned desserts. The brand that makes baking easy and quick for everyone in effortlessly simple steps, launched recently a highly innovative mug cake. Available in three indulging flavors, chocolate, blueberry and brownie, Betty Crocker Mug treats satiate diverse palates and require only one minute to be microwaved at the comfort of one’s home.

Betty Crocker had proudly succeeded last year to set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for baking the Largest marble cake ever which measured 16 square-meters and weighed 733 Kilos with approximately 15,000 Betty Crocker marble cake mixes.

New application developers have partnered with Airbus to create secure multimedia solutions for professional communication. For instance, the Finnish companies Varjo, which will showcase their Virtual and Extended Reality solutions, and Nsion, which develops real-time video apps for public safety organisations, will give an insight into the new possibilities of Airbus critical communications platforms.

”The continuously expanding Airbus app portfolio grows to an ecosystem that meets the demands of mission- and business-critical markets. During CCMENA, Airbus shows a thoughtful and consistent concept of how the latest smart technologies can combine current and future critical communication technology,” says Selim Bouri, Vice-President and Head of Middle East, North Africa and Asia-Pacific for Secure Land Communications at Airbus.

Among the latest Airbus products, the award-winning Tactilon Dabat plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between secure narrowband and broadband networks. It is the world’s first integrated smartphone and full Tetra radio in one and will be on display during the CCMENA. It unfolds as a highly secure mobile device including manifold Airbus-approved multimedia applications facilitating the work of police officers, paramedics, firefighters and industries.

Since the start of the Airbus ‘Critical App Challenge for the Middle East’, more and more pioneers, start-up companies and inventive minds have given birth to useful app ideas for the Dabat device. The online challenge asks participants to develop proofs of concept for innovative mission-critical solutions for “Secure Land Communications’” app ecosystem.

Furthermore, Airbus will showcase on its booth in Dubai a new way to test its Viewcor monitoring capability for secure broadband network functionalities. By installing Viewcor Agent in smart phones, the service quality of the mobile broadband network can be monitored in real time. No integration with a verified network is needed. The solution works both in commercial and dedicated 3G and 4G/LTE networks. In the future also 5G networks are supported. Trials can be started immediately.

Airbus itself has developed a highly versatile collaboration solution Tactilon Agnet for business- and mission-critical communication. It helps gather, process and deploy intelligence for businesses or governmental organisations to expand their communication in groups. Voice, video and data will be available for exchanging information securely with Tetra or Tetrapol networks.

Going public under the theme ‘Intelligence Shared’, Airbus as CCMENA’s Diamond partnerwill also showcase other Tetra and other solutions on booth B20 at the Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai. The latest developments consist of a multitude of future applications to facilitate communication and collaboration among public safety and industrial users.

“Critical Communications MENA” in Dubai from 24th to 25th September.

The spooky secrets hidden in the depths of West Yorkshire’s Standedge Tunnel are to be revealed to the public in October when the historic attraction hosts its very first official paranormal investigation.

Cut through 5,000m (3.2 miles) of Pennine grit and sitting more than 190m (640ft) under the surrounding hills, travelling through Standedge Tunnel is a spooky affair at the best of times thanks to its dank atmosphere and eerie gloom – but on October 20, the tunnel may very well reveal its darkest secrets with the visit of the Soul Reaper Paranormal investigations team.

First opened in 1811, tales of creepy goings on in the tunnel – known as ‘one of the Seven Wonders of the British Waterways thanks to its history and picturesque location – have been rife for many a year. Visitors and staff have noted strange lights, unexplained sounds and even a mysterious robed figure that disappeared into the tunnel itself. When the tunnel was closed in the 1980s, local newspaper reports suggest that Black Magic rituals may have taken place at Standedge – the articles claim workers found strange wall paintings and severed sheep’s heads deep underground.

Dating from 1811, Standedge Tunnel’s long history may provide a fertile hunting ground for the Soul Reaper team and their guests. Official figures claim that 50 people died in the 17 years it took a team of 2,500 navvies to dig the tunnel that stretches from Marsden in West Yorkshire to Diggle in Greater Manchester. The real death toll is thought to be much higher, however, as many of those injured on the site and who later died at home may not feature in the official count.

The evening will begin with a brief talk on the history of Standedge Tunnel, setting the scene for what promises to be a night full of intrigue. The Soul Reaper team will then give guests a demonstration of their equipment before leading them into the tunnel’s darkest reaches to conduct a series of investigations that will conclude just short of the midnight witching hour.

Soul Reaper Paranormal founder and lead investigator Kyle Thompson said: “It isn’t very often that we work with the general public. However, after hearing the many reports of people who claim to have seen and heard strange things at Standedge, it was simply one of the places we decided we had to to investigate.

A Paranormal Investigation, Saturday, October 20, 2018, 8pm-11pm, £20 per person.

Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre is owned and run by the Canal & River Trust. The Canal & River Trust is the guardian of 2,000 miles of historic waterways across England and Wales, caring for the nation’s third largest collection of listed structures, as well as museums, archives, and hundreds of important wildlife sites. Loro Parque or ‘Loro Park’ is a 13.5-hectare zoo on the outskirts of Crossport or Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Spain where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. Loro Parque is also a famous tourist attraction on this Canarian Island

Loro Parque has good news to share: Morgan is a female orca who was rescued in the Wadden Sea, off the northwestern coast of the Netherlands in June 2010. She was found in an unhealthy condition, severely underweight and malnourished. She lived several months at the Dolfinarium Harderwijk in the Netherlands.

After it became clear that the basin at Dolfinarium was too small, multiple options were considered, including releasing Morgan and transferring her to another facility. Over a year later, after litigation and debate between scientists, a Dutch court ruled that she was to be moved. Morgan was transported to the Loro Parque in Tenerife.

The killer whale or orca is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey

She gave birth to her first calf this morning, which finds itself in a perfect state of health. From the very first moment, Morgan demonstrated to be an exemplary mother attending to her newborn, which is swimming next to its mother in the installations of the ‘OrcaOcean’.

When Morham was recided she only weighed 430 Kg and the keepers of the Dutch dolphinarium were not sure that the animal was going to survive the first night after its rescue. They, however, we’re hopeful that with a proper level of care, affection and attention of the caregivers, as well as with the adequate nutrition, the animal could make a recovery.

Thanks to all these efforts of the team at Harderwijk, the animal began to recover its weight and strength, and as the Harderwijk installations were not prepared to keep orcas, the Dutch authorities initiated a formal commission to determine the future of the orca Morgan. A group of international and independent experts came to the conclusion that there were only two viable alternatives for the animal: euthanasia or to be kept at an installation of an aquarium that complied with the necessary conditions for this animal species.

At this moment, as Loro Parque had the most modern installations for orcas in existence, the Park was contacted to see if it would accept the animal. Despite all the challenges that this request represented, Loro Parque accepted the petition, thus, avoiding the only other alternative that was left for the animal: the euthanasia.

After a few months at our installations, the orca Morgan adapted to the new conditions and integrated perfectly into the existing group of orcas at Loro Parque. At the same time, it was discovered that the orca suffered a severe hearing deficiency, which was yet another argument to confirm that animal was incapable to survive on her own in nature.

Given this last circumstance, there were a number of questions as to what exactly a delivery would imply for the animal without a hearing capacity. Today, Loro Parque would like to share the great news: the delivery went in a completely normal manner and the first hours after the birth have been developing in accordance with the best expectations.

It is impossible to know the gender of the new calf yet, although the most important issue now is that both, the mother and the calf, find themselves in a perfect state of health. Loro Parque will be informing the public about the development of the situation, and would like to take this opportunity to thank all its visitors from many different parts of the world, the tour operators and all the collaborators in the scientific field for all the support to the Loro Parque mission: to protect and conserve animals and their natural habitats for future generations.

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong, the first Hig Speed Rail Service in Hong Kong Rail was launched today (23 September 2018), bringing visitors from around the world the chance to travel quickly and conveniently between Hong Kong and cities across Mainland China. In particular, the new rail link puts Hong Kong in easy reach of nine neighbouring cities in Guangdong Province and heralds a major boost to tourism in the Greater Bay Area.

The 26-km rail link connects Hong Kong for the first time to Mainland China’s vast high-speed rail network, the world’s most extensive. Travellers will be able to ride from Hong Kong to 44 destinations in Mainland China destinations without changing trains, making the city an ideal starting point for multi-destination journeys through China. With frequent direct high-speed trains linking Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Guangzhou in as little as 48 minutes, travelling within the Greater Bay Area will be faster and more convenient than ever before.

The Hong Kong section of the High Speed Rail network runs from West Kowloon Station, one of the world’s largest underground high-speed railway stations and a new must-see landmark for visitors to the city. The station’s design has already garnered a number of international design awards including one at the World Architecture Festival Awards, known as the “Oscars of architecture”. Visitors can enjoy views of iconic Victoria Harbour by walking along the Sky Corridor on the station’s rooftop. A three-hectare green area outside the station, meanwhile, provides a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city for residents and tourists alike.

Outside the station, there is a wealth of entertainment and attractions for visitors who want to enjoy shopping, dining, or a taste of traditional Hong Kong. The tourism hub of Tsim Sha Tsui with its world-renowned restaurants and shopping malls is a short walk away. The station is also connected by public transport to fascinating neighbourhoods including Sham Shui Po in Kowloon where visitors can experience authentic Hong Kong life, or Old Town Central on Hong Kong Island where visitors can enjoy history, arts, food, and culture in one of the city’s oldest and most idiosyncratic districts.

Directly outside the station is Hong Kong’s new arts and cultural hub, the West Kowloon Cultural District. It is directly outside the station, which will soon offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous array of exhibitions, performances, and cultural events as soon as they step off the High Speed Rail network.

There has never been a better time to get on the train and discover Hong Kong and cities across Mainland China. Tickets for the High Speed Rail network are available online, from ticket agents, and through a tele-ticketing hotline.

The Prague Congress Centre organized, in cooperation with the Rapid Deployment Unit of the Czech Republic under the auspices of the Mayor of Prague Mgr. Adriana Krnáčová, MBA and Police President Genmjr. Mgr. Tomáš Tuhý, Ph. D,. an extensive counter-terrorist drill. The event took place on 10 and 11 September 2018 on the premises of the Prague Congress Centre and in the immediate vicinity of the building and served as an important test after the modernization and introduction of new security systems in the building.

Preparation of the event with the Security Director of the PCC took more than a year. As part of the exercise, 70 armed perpetrators invaded a musical performance in the presence of 2000 visitors – extras, who were freed by the intervention of elite units of the Czech police. The Prague Congress Centre is the second largest building in terms of engineering technologies in the Czech Republic, and for its location, position and purpose, it belongs among the Czech Republic’s strategic buildings

Therefore, over the last two years, the PCC has been working closely with the Integrated Rescue System (IRS). Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Prague Congress Centre to enjoy a beautiful view towards Prague Castle, in addition to attending a congress, conference or cultural performance. “The effort to increase the safety of our visitors has naturally led to the idea of carrying out a drill where all IRS groups will be able to prove their skills and test their limits and the Prague Congress Centre will be able to practice the evacuation of a large number of people from such complex premises,” explains the Security Director of the PCC, Mr. Jiří Brych.

More than 400 police officers, 50 medical officers and six fire brigade units evacuated all 2000 hostages that had already been stuck all around the premises of the Prague Congress Centre within seven minutes. Within 100 minutes of the intervention, the last “wounded” person was transported to the Královské Vinohrady Faculty Hospital, where medical crews brought dozens of other “wounded” persons. Besides the IRS units, the Fire Brigade of the Prague Congress Centre, which is an integral part of the building, took part and applied its experience in cooperation with Prague firefighters.

Since 2016, the Prague Congress Centre has been constantly investing in security. The modernization of firefighting technologies and the retrofitting of the fire brigade has already been carried out, as well as a complete modernization of the CCTV system. The building is now monitored by more than 300 cameras. All dispatching units have been centralized, and a modern security concept has been set up. Strengthening physical security has also been a part of these changes. The number of security guards has been increased, turnstiles have been installed at the Prague Congress Centre’s entrances, and chip-cards, which contribute to better security of the building and at the same time help when evacuating people, have also been introduced.

A clean Victoria harbor is an area enjoyed by residents and tourists for generations. It is also essential for the survival of local marine wildlife, as it is an important feeding ground and source of food.

Victoria Harbour is a harbor, seaport, and seaplane airport located in the Canadian city of Victoria, British Columbia. It serves as a cruise ship and ferry destination for tourists and visitors to the city and Vancouver Island. It is both a port of entry and an airport of entry for general aviation

Today, Transport Canada awarded approximately $17.66 million in a contract to QM/JJM Contracting JV to restore the environmental health of Laurel Point Park and the harbour by removing persistent contaminants from the ecosystem.

Between 1906 and 1975, Laurel Point Park, located in the Middle Harbour of Victoria, was the site of a paint factory. Industrial activities left persistent contaminants in the soil, posing a threat to marine life. The pollutants do not pose a risk to residents and park users.

The Laurel Point Park cleanup is the final phase of Transport Canada’s comprehensive Middle Harbour Remediation Project to preserve the harbour and remove persistent contaminants from the ecosystem. The first phase successfully remediated contaminated underwater sediments in Victoria Harbour. Work on the final phase will begin next month and is expected to end by late next year. Workers will dig up contaminated soil at Laurel Point Park, backfill the area with clean soil and re-turf the park.

The Middle Harbour Remediation Project is funded through the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP), which is coordinated by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, and provides funding to assess and remediate federal contaminated sites. The Government of Canada is taking action under the FCSAP to preserve our ecosystems for generations to come.

“The Government of Canada takes its responsibility to clean up federal contaminated sites like Victoria’s Middle Harbour seriously. Today’s announcement demonstrates action and illustrates our ongoing commitment to protecting Canada’s marine environment and for residents.”

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport

Victoria Harbour is shared by industry, tourism businesses and local wildlife, and a perfect example of how the environment and the economy go hand in hand. This project will preserve Laurel Point Park as a feeding ground for wildlife, a place for locals to relax, and an attraction for tourists that will benefit generations to come.”

Joyce Murray, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government

Canada’s coasts and waterways are an important part of Canadian identity. Our coasts enable the export of our goods overseas and the import of foreign goods into Canada. They are home to Canadian fisheries, attract tourism, and support coastal communities’ livelihoods and Indigenous cultures and ways of life.

Abandoned boats are a growing problem across Canada, and the Government of Canada, under the Oceans Protection Plan, is working diligently to deter this practice. Today, Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government Joyce Murray announced, on behalf of the Minister of Transport the Honourable Marc Garneau, the most recent applicants to receive funding under the Abandoned Boats Program. This program provides money to support the assessment, removal, and disposal of abandoned boats in Canadian waters.

A total of $31,346 will be provided to remove six boats that litter the shores of British Columbia. Recipients are:

  • Bowen Island Municipality (Bowen Island) – $5,250
  • Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (Vancouver) – $6,411
  • Salish Sea Industrial Services (Victoria) – $19,685

Under the Abandoned Boats Program, a total of $6.85 million will be allocated under the Oceans Protection Plan—a $1.5 billion initiative which is the largest investment ever made to protect Canada’s coasts and waterways. This national strategy is creating a world-leading marine safety system that provides economic opportunities for Canadians today, while protecting our coastlines for generations to come. The strategy is being developed in close collaboration with Indigenous peoples, local stakeholders, and coastal communities.

Quotes

“With the Abandoned Boats Program, the Government of Canada has made a meaningful investment to help clean up local communities. Congratulations to the successful applicants for working with us to keep British Columbia beautiful, and to address environmental pollution and hazards to navigation caused by these abandoned wrecks.”

Joyce Murray
Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government

“Under the Oceans Protection Plan, we continue to do excellent work to strengthen, beautify, and safeguard our coasts and waterways for future generations. I am pleased to witness municipalities, ports, and private companies coming together to support the Government of Canada in its ambitious goals.”

The Honourable Marc Garneau
Minister of Transport

Quick Facts

  • Since May 31, 2017, the Abandoned Boats Program has launched three calls for proposals for projects to be funded through grants and contributions, the most recent of which will remain open until March 31, 2019. To date, funding has been approved for the assessment of 86 boats for a total of $265,060, and for the removal of 20 boats for a total of $136,746.
  • To help stem the flow of problem vessels, the Government of Canadahas also proposed new legislation. The Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act (Bill C-64) will increase vessel owner liability, and strengthen the Government’s response in cases where owners do not behave responsibly with regards to disposal of their boats.
  • Other important measures undertaken by the Government of Canadainclude improving vessel owner identification, creating an inventory of vessels and assessing their risks, and establishing a polluter pays approach for vessel clean-up.

National Strategy to address Canada’s wrecked and abandoned vessels

The Government of Canada recognizes that wrecked and abandoned vessels can pose hazards to the environment, public health and safety, and local economies such as fishing and tourism industries.

Most owners are responsible and maintain and dispose of their vessels properly. However, a small percentage of owners who are not responsible can create significant impacts on our coastal communities, with the burden for costly clean-up often falling on Canadian taxpayers.

In November 2016, the Government of Canada launched the $1.5 billionOceans Protection Plan, to improve marine safety and responsible shipping, protect Canada’s marine environment and help advance Indigenous reconciliation.

This comprehensive national strategy, focused on preventing and removing these problem vessels, is a key element of the Oceans Protection Plan.

This strategy includes:

  • Bill C-64 – Proposed Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act
    • Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007
  • Inventory and assessments
  • Improving vessel owner identification
  • Long-term funding for the removal of wrecked and abandoned vessels
  • The Abandoned Boats Program
  • The Small Craft Harbours Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels Removal Program

Collectively, these measures aim to reduce the number of problem vessels that pose hazards in Canadian waters, and support the preservation and restoration of marine ecosystems.

PROPOSED WRECKED, ABANDONED OR HAZARDOUS VESSELS ACT

In 2017, the Government of Canada introduced the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act. This will:

  • bring into Canadian law the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007;
  • address irresponsible vessel management by prohibiting: vessel abandonment; causing a vessel to become a wreck; or leaving a dilapidated (poor condition) vessel in the same area without consent;
  • strengthen owner responsibility and liability for their vessels, including costs for clean-up and removal; and
  • empower the federal government to address problem vessels more proactively.

Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007 (Nairobi Convention)

In 2017, the Government of Canada tabled the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007. The Nairobi Convention strengthens ship owners’ liability for hazardous wrecks resulting from marine incidents. Once brought into force of law in Canada, vessel owners will be strictly liable for locating, marking, and, if necessary, removing at their cost a wreck that poses a hazard.

Owners of large commercial vessels (300 gross tonnes and above) will also be required to maintain insurance or other financial security to cover the potential costs related to the locating, marking and removal of the wreck.

INVENTORY AND ASSESSMENTS

An on-going inventory of wrecked and abandoned vessels will be developed. This publically accessible inventory will be kept up to date and include risk assessments to guide and prioritize future actions on high risk vessels.

IMPROVING VESSEL OWNER IDENTIFICATION

The effectiveness of the proposed new legislation will rely on the ability to identify vessel owners. The Government is working with provinces and territories to collaborate on ways to further enhance the pleasure craft licensing system, and has launched a study to assess gaps in Canada’s commercial vessel registration systems.

LONG-TERM FUNDING FOR THE REMOVAL OF WRECKED AND ABANDONED VESSELS

As part of the national strategy on wrecked and abandoned vessels and as part of the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government is looking at options to establish vessel-owner financed funds to address large and small high risk vessels over the longer-term.

THE ABANDONED BOATS PROGRAM

Transport Canada’s five-year, $6.85 million Abandoned Boats Program, announced in 2017, provides funding to:

  • assist communities in the assessment, removal and disposal of existing high-priority abandoned and/or wrecked small boats posing hazards in Canadian waters;
  • educate small-boat owners about how to responsibly manage their end-of-life boats; and
  • support research on boat recycling and environmentally responsible boat design.

A guide for applicants and additional information is available on Transport Canada’s website at:http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/abandoned-boats-program.html

THE SMALL CRAFT HARBOURS ABANDONED AND WRECKED VESSELS REMOVAL PROGRAM

Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Abandoned and Wrecked Vessels Removal Program, announced in 2017, will provide up to $1.325 million over five years to Harbour Authorities and other eligible recipients to remove and dispose of abandoned and/or wrecked vessels located in small craft harbours owned by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
