LONDON (eTN) – The United Nations World Tourism Organization and World Travel Market jointly hosted Minister’s Summit whereby selected tourism dignitaries from the public and private sectors debated three key issues in “Shaping a Stronger Travel and Tourism Industry.”

Moderated by CNN’s very lively Richard Quest, the panel debate was dynamic, at times comical and surreal, but overall covered significant areas—from governance and the significance of governance to excessive taxation by governments and sustainable tourism.

Dominating the debate was the area of taxation. UK’s controversial Air Passenger Duty has been met with widespread opposition putting UK Tourism Minister John Penrose on the defense. Many members of the debate panel, especially those from the UK private sector, made their disdain for the APD very clear.

Presented in the below raw audio (in MP3 format) is the debate portion of the UNWTO Minister’s Summit. Opening remarks by WTM chairman Fiona Jeffery and UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai and UNWTO assistant secretary-general Geoffrey Lipman’s closing remarks have been omitted.
