TSA issues advisory for travel to Venezuela

The US Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that the agency has been unable to assess security measures at international airports in Venezuela

The US Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that the agency has been unable to assess security measures at international airports in Venezuela that serve as the last point of departure for non-stop flights to the United States.

After multiple requests, Venezuela has refused to allow for such assessments, which are required by US law. TSA is taking action to warn travelers of this security deficiency. TSA has directed air carriers issuing tickets for travel between the United States and Venezuela to notify ticket purchasers in writing of the situation.

This advisory, under TSA’s direction, will be displayed prominently at all US airports. The order is effective immediately.

While the order is directed only at airlines (because TSA has jurisdiction over them), travel agencies will need to alert their customers traveling to Venezuela in order to avoid customer service issues.

We anticipate more formal directions from the airlines so be on the lookout for them. Meanwhile, use e-mail to make a record that the notice was given. For more information about TSA, please visit www.tsa.gov .
