WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A record 162,000 tourists visited New Zealand last month, dominated by visitors from Japan and China. The arrivals beat last year's June total of 159,500.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A record 162,000 tourists visited New Zealand last month, dominated by visitors from Japan and China.

The arrivals beat last year’s June total of 159,500.

“Visitor arrivals are the highest ever for a June month,” Statistics NZ population statistics manager Vina Cullum said.

“Growth was driven by visitors from Asia, especially Japan and China.”

Statistics NZ said 2.79 million people visited New Zealand in the year to June, up 6 percent from the June 2013 year. The top four origins for the year were Australia, China, the United States, and Britain.

Going the other way, New Zealanders took 206,500 overseas trips in June up 4 percent from June 2013, and in the year to June, they took 2.24 million trips, up 4 percent from last year.
