Southwest, WestJet code-sharing delayed

DALLAS — A code-sharing program involving Southwest Airlines and the Canadian airline WestJet has been delayed because of difficult economic conditions.

Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines’ executive vice president for strategy and planning, said in a news release Monday the Dallas-based airline remains committed to a code-sharing partnership with WestJet.

But he says Southwest is focusing for now on increasing its revenues and other critical objectives because of the tough economic environment.

WestJet executive vice president Hugh Dunleavy says his airline understands the decision made by Southwest and that code-sharing is only one element of its U.S. expansion strategy.
