Free Walking Tours
If you’re keen to see the city’s sights and learn more about the history, from a hyper- informed tour guide, look no further than the fun and free services of Sandeman Tours. No fee is demanded for the several-hour long, guided city exploration – instead they simply request that you tip your guide if you think they did a good job.
If you fancy flexing your synaptic muscles, take yourself down to Max Euwe Centrum for a free game of chess! This centre is dedicated to the game and is free all, from Monday to Thursday, between 12:00 noon and 16:00. You’ll find this place down on Max Euweplein 30II, 1017 MB Amsterdam.
It’s cheesy, mass produced and not everyone’s cup of tea but when you’re feeling the night before or you just need a cheap tasty treat, you can’t go wrong with the one euro burger at good old McDonalds. There are several in Amsterdam, including one located conveniently close to the downtown, on Nieuwendijk.
Green spaces can be hard to come by in a city as compact as Amsterdam but luckily enough, there’s a huge park on the doorstep for everyone staying at the Flying Pig Uptown hostel. Vondelpark is quite literally just out of the hostel’s front door, and the scenic stress busting walks here – past the water features, trees and bandstands – cost nothing.
Friday Night Skate
If you’re looking for exercise on holiday without having to fork out for a gym pass or a hot yoga session, then how about a Friday night rollerblade through the city streets? If you have your own wheels, this weekly meet is free to all and starts in the Vondelpark, just next to the Flying Pig Uptown hostel. It then goes on a circuit taking in the canals and the harbor, before returning to the park. Find out more about the where, the when and the theme, online.
Take a Free Ferry Ride
Canal boat tours of Amsterdam can cost a small fortune, so instead why not hop a free ferry ride from Amsterdam to the shipyard in the cool, new, and regenerated – Berlinesque area. The ferry connecting Amsterdam to Berlinesque is a commuter service and just like the Staten Island Ferry in New York – it’s free for all foot passengers who come aboard.
Get Your Beach On
When you think of Amsterdam you don’t automatically picture sandy beaches and sunbathing … that is until now. The city does in fact offer several top notch, urban beaches, complete with swimming options and sunbathing on the sand. To swim head to Blijburg, Muiderlaan 1001 Amsterdam and for quality beach time, try Strand West, Stavangerweg 900 Amsterdam.
