VANCOUVER – The Taiwan Tourism Bureau hosted “Cycling Taiwan” at the Robson Square in Downtown Vancouver on Thursday, June 5, 2014. This event was a unique way for the Bureau to promote its tourism industry and allow the people of Vancouver to experience Taiwan’s cities and countryside on two wheels.

The event opened with a surprising flash mob performance with the tourism ambassador Oh!Bear from Taiwan. The Taiwan Tourism Bureau set up fifteen stationary bicycles with screens with footage from Taiwan’s top five bike paths to simulate the experience of cycling through the island’s beautiful routes. More than 150 Vancouverites participated in the event.

The Taiwan Tourism Bureau was honored to have professional cyclist and Olympian, Zach Bell, at the “Cycling Taiwan” event. Bell represented Canada at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Bell also placed first in stage 4 of the 2013 Tour de Taiwan.

Zach Bell commented, “Racing in Taiwan exceeded my expectations. It allowed me to see the sport through a different lens. The diversity of landscapes we encountered was intriguing, and the people were not only excited about the race but also interested in the cycling. It was evident that cycling is a big part of the Taiwanese culture.”

The Taiwan Tourism Bureau was honored to have Acting Mayor of Vancouver, Kerry Jang, and Acting Mayor of Burnaby Anne Kang at the event. Hsi-Lin Liu, Deputy Director General of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, added, “Two-thirds of Taiwan is covered with mountains. There are some untouched places on the island that cars cannot reach but bicycles can. Cycling truly provides the Taiwanese people as well as visitors from all over the world with an alternative way to explore the beauty of Taiwan.”

The same evening, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau held a trade show and dinner. More than 150 travel agents and tour operators in the Lower Mainland attended the event to learn more about the recent tourism development in the country, and met the major travel partners from Taiwan.
