All eyes last weekend were on the new Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa on Beau Vallon Beach for the crowning of “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, as the outgoing beauty queen Agnes Gerry crowned Camilla Estico as “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014.
Since the beginning of the pageant, Camilla Estico was much more daring than the eleven running contestants. Surprisingly, it was this zealous spirit which stands in stark contrast to the other contestant personalities that made her the jury’s favorite. A beauty queen at 23, on the night of the pageant, the lucky star was shining in the direction of this young Seychelloise who has been living in the United States for nine years and studying performing Arts at Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, one of United States’ top-ranking performing arts schools. Taking her first shot in the “Miss Seychelles… Another World” beauty pageant, Camilla woke up on Sunday, June 1, feeling she is definitely one of the most beautiful ladies in Seychelles islands. She did not only win the crown of “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, but she took home the titles of Miss Talent and Miss Photogenic, leaving Lisa Rose with the title of first princess and Marvel Godley as second princess.
In her opening remarks Sherin Naiken, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board said the pageant has moved out of its early days as just a beauty contest.
“Today it is not just about beauty for beauty’s sake, but rather beauty with a purpose.”
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, said these contestants made the wise decision to come forward and be part of this pageant.
“It is not by staying at home and looking at a mirror and saying ‘Mirror, mirror, who is the prettiest of all’ that you will become a winner. It is those girls that have taken their courage in both hands and are now contesting who are all winners. What we are doing is putting our culture in the forefront, the culture of a nation is in the heart and soul of its people. This is why ‘Miss Seychelles… Another World’ becomes our Ambassador for the Tourism Board. Our culture plays a part today and will continue to play a part tomorrow in the marketing of our destination,” said Minister St.Ange.
On the night of the pageant, the contestants’ fates were in the jury’s hands, which were the contestants’ magic mirrors.
From the seven finalists, the People’s Choice Award went to Ronda Sidonie, Raphaela Dugasse pulled the Miss Sports Award, Camilla Estico pulled Miss Talent & Miss Photogenic, and Elmina Savy pulled the Best Effort for Project. As the seven finalists courageously answered questions from the jury, it became more evident who will be the potential winners.
Camilla Estico, reigning “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, picked out Christoph Ganster’s question. Mr. Ganster, the General Manager of Raffles Praslin Resort Seychelles asked, “While making decisions in life, do you listen to your heart or mind? Who inspires you and why? Who would you like to be inspired, if you were crowned ‘Miss Seychelles… Another World’ 2014?”
To which Camilla answered: “I follow my heart. My parents inspire me, and I wish to inspire my younger sister, Beatrice, as she looks up to me in many ways, and I would like to be a good role model for her in future.” A million dollar answer that surely has contributed immensely to her clinching the title. The pageant night also saw the crowning of Stephanie Duval as Miss Personality and Raphaella Dugasse as Miss Sports. Michealla Rosette won Best Evening wear, Elmina Savy won for Best Effort for Project, and Ronda Sidonie took home the People’s Choice Award. By winning this title, Ronda automatically made it as one of the seven finalists.
For the other contestants, as the curtain closed on the pageant, this is where the journey ended for them. But for Camilla Estico, a new chapter is opening up for her, to prove to the members of the jury who have given her the title, that they have made the right and sound choice.
