(eTN) – Earlier in the week Kenya Airways hosted its best performing travel agencies to recognize their support during the 2013/14 Financial Year. At hand was the airline’s CEO Dr. Titus Naikuni and members of his senior management, when BCD Travel scooped the top award of the year, followed by runner ups – Bunson Travel and Charleston Travel. Travel ‘N Style was also singled out for their sales on the route to London.

Dr. Naikuni used the opportunity to speak his mind on the ongoing crisis the tourism industry was going through in Kenya when he cited Israel as an example of a country surrounded by unfriendly neighbors and subject to periodic terrorist attacks and yet welcoming more visitors from around the world than Kenya does. Dr. Naikuni said: “This tells that there must be something wrong and we have a lot of work to do to improve our own situation,” challenging the industry in Kenya to rise to the challenges, take a note from how other countries have dealt with similar situations and rise again with more passengers, more visitors and higher occupancies and revenues.

Dr. Naikuni also made reference to the airline beginning to take delivery of more B787 aircraft starting next month and the construction of a new mega terminal dubbed ‘Project Greenfield’ when he expressed his hope that the new terminal facilities and second runway will position Nairobi as THE aviation hub in Eastern Africa, able to attract and handle more arrivals but crucially also more transit passengers flying with Kenya Airways from around the world to Africa, via Nairobi.
