TOKYO, Japan โ€“ The number of passengers using Narita airport during the Golden Week holiday period fell 4.1 percent this year compared with 2013, to 745,490, immigration office figures show.

The popular vacation period, which spans several national holidays, fell between April 25 and May 6 this year and contained more formal working days than last year. Other factors for slimmer check-in queues may be the April 1 consumption tax hike dampening demand for travel and new landing slots for international flights at Tokyoโ€™s other main airport, Haneda, which has seen 63 flights from 4 airlines move from Narita to the city-center rival.

The number of Japanese passengers using Narita decreased by more than 18 percent, to 424,030, while the number of foreigners arriving and departing jumped more than 24 percent, to 321,460, said Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureauโ€™s office at Narita.
