HILLAH, Iraq – Iraqi tourism officials say they are offering newlyweds the chance to spend their honeymoon in the bed of the late dictator Saddam Hussein.
Officials in Hillah, about 60 miles south of Baghdad, said Saddam’s room in the presidential palace can be rented for $220 per night, The Times of London reported Monday.
“We hope that many people will visit,” a tourism official said.
The palace is currently undergoing renovations after its former resident was deposed in 2003 and executed in 2006. Rooms that were once used by Saddam’s special guard have already been converted into hotel rooms with large TVs and king size beds, but palace officials said they are unsure how long it could take to convert the rest of the building’s bedrooms.
“I’ve been here three years and I can’t tell you how many bedrooms or bathrooms there are,” said Abdul Satar Naji, head of security for the palace.
