US citizen international outbound travel up one percent

WASHINGTON, DC – US travel to overseas markets totaled 29.0 million, up two percent for the year.

Regional results were:

Europe, 11.4 million travelers, up two percent

Caribbean, 6.5 million travelers, up two percent

Asia, 4.3 million travelers, flat for the year

Central America, 2.5 million travelers, up four percent

South America, 1.7 million travelers, up two percent

Middle East, 1.6 million travelers, up five percent

Oceania, 572,000 travelers, up five percent

Africa, 352,000 travelers, down four percent

US travel to North American markets totaled 32.6 million, up one percent compared to 2012.

Mexico, 20.5 million travelers, up one percent (We expect this estimate may be revised in June). Air travel (6.2 million) was up eight percent
Canada, 12.0 million travelers, up one percent; air travel (3.8 million) was up by five percent.

Annual 2013 Market Shares

U.S. travel to overseas locations again accounted for 47 percent of total U.S. outbound travel.

Europe, a 19 percent share;
Caribbean, an 11 percent share;
Asia, a seven percent share;
Central America, a four percent share;
South America, a three percent share;
Middle East, a three percent share;
Oceania, a one percent share, and
Africa, a one percent share.
North American markets received 53 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.

U.S. travel to Mexico over a 33 percent share; and
Canada almost 20 percent share.
Monthly Percentage Changes:

Easter/Passover occurred earlier in 2013 (March 31) than in 2012 (April 8).

U.S. – Mexico border (1+ night) travel was up 30% in August, driving the overall change in U.S. to Mexico up 16% for the month.

Thanksgiving occurred later in 2013 (November 28) than in 2012 (November 22).
