Impressive an event it was when four personalities from two Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands addressed international delegates and press who were in Seychelles for the 30th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC/COI) at the ceremony on January10 that transformed the Creole Institute of Seychelles into the International Creole Institute.

Creole in its diversity was displayed when Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture; Didier Robert, the President of the Regional Council of La Reunion; Roland Robert, the Vice President of the General Council of La Reunion; and Penda Choppy, the Director of the new International Creole Institute delivered their addresses at Au Cap.

Minister St.Ange delivered part of his address in the Creole language of the Seychelles, but President Didier Robert and Vice President Roland Robert on their part delivered part of their address in the Creole language of La Reunion. Madame Penda Choppy also delivered her address in the Creole language of the Seychelles. Present also at this ceremony were Mr. Jean Claude de L’Estrac, the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission. and Minister Arvin Bodell, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mauritius. who also made it a point to speak in the Creole language of Mauritius during the ceremony at the International Creole Institute.

“The press present were impressed by the diversity that existed in the Creole language, even though the Creole in the four speeches were understood by delegations of all the three Indian Ocean Islands. We have differences, but the similarities are much stronger and remains unifying points of our relationship and togetherness,” Minister Alain St.Ange said to the press gathered at the Creole Institute.

The history of these three islands (Seychelles, La Reunion, and Mauritius) help form the base of the bond that exists between them today.
