Malaysian airlines to discuss future of nation’s aviation industry

KUALKA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Airline companies, will for the first time, sit together to chart the future direction of the aviation industry in the interest of the nation despite being stiff competitors in the trade.

Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the ministry hoped to invite airline companies such as Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Firefly, Malindo and others to meet and discuss core policy issues.

The focus on the national aviation industry was vital as passenger traffic at airports, nationwide, had increased tremendously to 43.9 million between January and July last year from 38.6 million in the same period in 2012, he said in a statement.

Air cargo volume rose to 529,000 tonnes in the first six months of last year.

Hishammuddin said the ministry would also focus on the development of KLIA2, scheduled for opening on May 2, and upgrading efforts for several airports including Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Miri, Sibu and Mukah.

The ministry would also ensure the smooth operations of the RM700 million air traffic management system which would be installed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said he presented two Cabinet papers at today’s Cabinet meeting on Malaysia having secured a seat in the International Maritime Organisation on Nov 29 and in the International Civil Aviation Organisation on Oct 1, 2013.

He described the international victory as proof that the country was on a strong foundation in both the aviation and maritime industries.

“It will also leap frog both industries to scale greater heights and in the process place Malaysia at par with other developed nations.

“This will contribute to the rapid development of other sectors including the tourism industry especially with the Visit Malaysia Year 2014,” he added.
