HONIARA, Solomon Islands – Solomon Airlines has announced the closure of its Ballalae service in Shortland Islands with a final flight January 2, 2014.
Solomon Airlines’ General Manager Operations and Commercial, Gus Kraus said the airline is shutting down its Ballalae operations until a new agent is identified and appointed.
This is the second time such drastic action has been taken regarding Ballalae in the past two years the airline said.
Solomon Airlines management has been forced into closing down its service to Ballalae because of outstanding arrears amounting to a substantial sum of money due to the airline by the agent.
“We have been in talks with the agent to recover the arrears but there has been no conclusive outcome and we have no other choice but to refer the matter legally and take this action in the immediate term.
“We regret doing this, but we have to take drastic action to ensure Solomon Airline’s operation to Ballalae is viable.”
Solomon Airlines provides weekly flights to Ballalae.
The airline will hold talks with potential agents early in the New Year.
Solomon Airlines is reviewing all of its other ports agency agreements across Solomon Islands and Kraus says other operators in a similar situation as Ballalae are likely to receive the same fate.
He thanked the people of the Shortland Islands for their understanding and cooperation as Solomon Airlines reviews its Ballalae service.
