New five star hotel in Perth will prompt competition

The Tourism Minister in Western,Australia Liza Harvey says a new five-star hotel in Perth will lead to an improvement in similar accommodation across the city.

Ms Harvey says the development is the first of its kind under the State Government’s hotel incentive policy and will stimulate refurbishments elsewhere.

The 350 room hotel will be built at the former FESA House site on Murray Street and incorporate the heritage-listed Hibernian Hall.

“What’s really exciting about a new five-star hotel product is that it then causes a ripple effect through the community,” she said.

“Other hotels that are in competition with the new hotel that’s being built here will then also be looking to make sure that their rooms are top-notch.”

Ms Harvey says property developers have been reluctant to build hotels in the city and the hotel incentive policy was needed to stimulate development.

“It’s been a difficult thing to try and stimulate five-star hotel development in Perth and part of the government’s strategy was to look for assets that were surplus,” she said.

The hotel is due to be completed in 2017.
