Hawaiian Airlines said Wednesday it will charge a $15 fee for the first checked bag on flights between Hawaii and the mainland, joining a growing number of carriers with the first-bag fee.

It isn’t charging the first-bag fee on flights between islands. The second bag fee is $17 inter-island, $25 mainland.

The first-bag fee is for travel booked Friday and afterward for travel Oct. 1 and afterward.

For bookings made over the phone Sept. 1 and afterward, Hawaiian Air will charge $10 for inter-island travel and $20 for other trips made over the phone.

The airline said it was imposing the fees ” In response to the unprecedented economic challenges facing the airline industry.”

Earlier Wednesday, Hawaiian reported second-quarter net income of $54.3 million, compared to a loss of $3.9 million a year earlier. But the 2008 numbers include $52.5 million from a lawsuit settlement with Mesa Air Group.
