ABERDEEN, Scotland – Tourism bosses in Aberdeen are attempting an unusual record today by gathering singers named David to perform the popular carol Once In Royal David’s City.

Anyone aged seven and older called David is invited to take part in the world record bid at the city’s Castlegate this afternoon.

Officials came up with the stunt to promote Aberdeen’s Christmas lights switch-on and winter festival.

No singing experience is necessary. People called Dave and Davie are also welcome to join the choir.

Steve Harris, chief executive of VisitAberdeen, said: “Once we made the song choice, we thought it would be a bit of fun to ask Davids aged seven and upwards to take part.

“The name David is always in the top 50 most popular names in Scotland so we are confident of a good response. Above all, we will be looking for festive enthusiasm from our Davids.”

Once In Royal David’s City tells the story of the birth of Jesus in a lowly cattle shed. The carol was originally written as a poem by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), who also wrote All Things Bright And Beautiful.
