LOS ANGELES, California – “We are very proud about our achievement,” said Mr. Javier Cordero, Director at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort, commenting about its recent certification from Green Globe. Barcelo Hotels & Resorts continuously play an important role in the travel & tourism industries’ worldwide environmental efforts.

Green Globe recently announced certification of the Punta Canta, Dominican Republic, resort. For years, this luxury resort complex has been dedicated to meet the highest international standards in regards to the environment, conservation and corporate social responsibility.

“We are very proud about our achievement,” said Mr. Cordero. “This prestigious award represents a milestone for our resort, and we will do our best to keep improving our sustainability efforts. Ethical and environmentally-friendly practices are integrated into the core values of our resort, recognizing that this will sustain our business for the present and the future. It is very important to preserve this beautiful part of the world, and be able to offer an eco-friendly vacation to our guests.”

“Going ‘Green’, has already resulted in significant savings of energy and natural resources at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort,” noted Green Globe’s CEO Guido Bauer during the official ceremony, held at the property last week. “Over the period of one year, water consumption was reduced by 8.2%, which equals 52 Olympic swimming pools, and CO2 emissions were cut down by 11,000 tons – equivalent to five round trip flights from Dubai to London.”

At a corporate level, Barcelo Hotels & Resorts have integrated green practices in the following six categories: waste management, energy saving and biodegradable products, sustainable design and construction, regular staff training to enhance ecological awareness, shared information inviting guests to reuse towels and sheets, and restoration of the native ecosystem surrounding the resorts. As part of its corporate social responsibility and commitment to society and the environment, the Barcelo Group subscribes to the Global Pact that is coordinated by the Culture Association of the United Nations and the Code of Conduct against Sexual Exploitation of Children.

In addition to the environmental practices implemented, the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort is closely involved with the community, promoting awareness of social and cultural needs, through a variety of actions. The property hosts seminars, educating local school children on environmental issues, on a regular basis. Partnering with Ecoservices, beach clean-up days are organized, and the resort supports relief programs in the region, such as to Haiti.
