Bangkok, Thailand-The bride and groom had to say “I do” with sign language, the master of ceremony held up the vows on a signboard, and the witnesses were exotic fish and mermaids, but Christopher and Janet surfaced from the reef as man and wife, and headed back to the resort for the traditional grand wedding celebration.
They were the first couple to marry underwater at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives, under a special programme designed by the five-star resort.
The diving was arranged by Best Dive, who work in association with Centara to organise diving and snorkelling trips, and who also created the underwater wedding set and decor.
Two days were needed to prepare the setting, a period that included a wedding rehearsal for the happy couple.
On the day of the wedding, Christopher and Janet along with their guests, members of Best Dive, staff members from the resort, and master of ceremony Ibrahim Shaan, set out by catamaran to the edge of the reef that surrounds the resort.
The happy couple then took the plunge.
Once the ceremony was completed, the newly-weds and their guests headed back onto dry land where they were taken by suitably decorated wedding buggy to their luxurious villa, where they cut the wedding cake and toasted their future with champagne.
The day was completed with Mr and Mrs and their guests enjoying dinner at the resort’s Reef restaurant, which had been decorated with candles and flowers for the occasion.
The rate for an underwater wedding ceremony at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives is USD700 plus service and tax.
