KIHEI, Maui, Hawaii – A south Maui beach was closed after a shark attacked a swimmer on Wednesday morning.
AP reports that county officials say a shark attacks happened this morning at Ulua Beach. A female swimmer was about 30 feet from shore in about 10 feet of water when a shark bit her in the upper torso. Additional details about the victim or her condition were not immediately available.
Signs have been posted warning people to stay out of the water.
According to AP, state and county officials closed the area a mile in both directions, from Polo Beach to the area in front of the Mana Kai Maui Resort.
Officials will evaluate whether the beach can re-open Thursday.
