The mainland’s Tourism Law, coming into effect in October, will help to protect both consumers and operators’ rights and provide better solutions to conflicts, according to Macau’s Government Tourist Office (MGTO) Director Helena de Senna Fernandes.

The “Tourism Law of the People’s Republic of China” is a national law that will come into effect on October 1 this year. While not applicable in Macau, considering the close relations between the mainland and Macau (especially with regards to supervision of the tourist markets), MGTO invited Deputy Director General of the Policy and Legal Department of the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), Li Lei, to Macau, to offer two explanation sessions about the new law.

The talk highlighted the provisions of the law concerning mainland residents’ visits to Macau and Hong Kong, helping governmental departments and operators in the travel industry understand more about the relevant law and its relation to the tourism development of both destinations.

Participating in the talk, Helena de Senna Fernandes indicated that MGTO highly values the upcoming enforcement of the Tourism Law in the mainland, which meets the needs arising from cross-regional and inter-trade development of the travel industry.

“MGTO believes that the law will effectively protect the legal rights of both visitors and operators, tackle irregularities in tourism markets, and provide better solutions to conflicts [within the industry] which can eventually facilitate sound tourist development of both destinations,” she said, “in line with Macau’s strategic positioning as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure. One of MGTO’s main work goals is to optimize industry management and training while actively promoting quality tourism. MGTO will adjust its supervision and inspection work according to the evolving market development and the implementation of the Tourism Law.” The two explanation sessions attracted over 200 attendees.
