ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada (eTN) – Governor General Sir Daniel Williams has sworn in Tillman Thomas as Grenada’s eighth prime minister following the National Democratic Congress’s 12-3 victory last Tuesday.

While supporters of the National Democratic Congress were celebrating the party’s 12–3 success on Tuesday night, officials of the incumbent New National Party reflected on their loss. “I must say we are surprise, but the people have spoken so we will provide them with effective representation in the Parliament,” said NNP spokesperson Terrence Forrester when it was announce that the NDC had won the election. “We will be engaging in some sober reflection and move on to building the party making it one that will provide representation for the people until we return to office in the next election whenever that will be.”

Thousand of Grenadians celebrated the NDC victory with street parties throughout over the island. The biggest casualty of the election was Deputy Prime Minister Gregory Bowen, who lost to newcomer Pastor Karl Hood by more than 400 votes. “I am overwhelmed,” said Hood.

Promising to lead with a positive partnership with the private sector and civil society, Thomas called on supporters to monitor the undertakings of the administration and to criticize them where necessary. “This is a victory not just for NDC but for Grenada, you the people of Grenada,” he said. “The time has come for this country to be ruled without corruption.”
