International Pow Wow 2013 starts off “beachy”

There were no notable speeches, just tons and tons of travel and tourism industry people from various parts of the world and the very select few to entertain them.

There were no notable speeches, just tons and tons of travel and tourism industry people from various parts of the world and the very select few to entertain them. That is how the first night of this year’s edition of the US Travel Association’s International Pow Wow can best be described.

Held at a spectacular setting at Mandalay Bay’s Beach Club, there was ample food and drinks to feed the record crowd that showed up, and the entertainment presented by MGM Resorts might as well stand for My Goodness, Man! MGM, get it? The DJs were good, and so were the singers. Oh, and the Blue Man Group showed up for 3 or so minutes of a spectacle. No surprises there, as the group is known to astound then leave the stage without so much as a wave goodbye.

Cirque du Soleil, however, presented the best and the worst parts of the night. The best being the two-man acrobat act that both defied logic and gravity, and the worst being the odd Michael Jackson One section, which again I will predict as did with the Elvis Presley tribute at Aria, will fail. Why? Simply put, no one goes to see a Cirque du Soleil show to see singers or dancers! They want to see athleticism and showmanship perfectly blend. Dancers nor faux guitar player with a giant guitar spewing firework ain’t gonna cut it, especially in a city like Las Vegas, where competition is fierce and the field is cutthroat. My best advice for Cirque du Soleil is quit venturing and do what you do best – put on the best circus act in town.

Overall, this fantastic Hollywood-style event was an excellent start for the United States presenting the best of the American Tourism Brand to top international attending buyers and journalists.
