With time on my hands, New Zealand photographer Gina Smith invited me to be her assistant at a photo shoot. Expecting the usual ceremony I was staggered to see her two glamorously dressed subjects (think striking frothy gown and ivory tuxedo), wading in to the sea.
“Trash the dress”, Phuket and Waikato/Coromandel based Gina explained. Originally an American concept, ‘trash the dress’, ‘fearless bridal’, and rock the frock refers to the untraditional notion of, well…….trashing the dress.
Now popular in Europe and Australia, TTD has seen portraiture featuring city streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and even abandoned
buildings. It is almost as a declaration that the wedding is done and
the dress will not be used again.
Gina explained that the idea of Trash the Dress is becoming more and more popular in Asia and that she is the only one that specialises in it in Phuket.”The stress of the wedding day has gone, so the couple are usually really relaxed, and we have a good time.”
