LONDON, England – German football supporters traveling to London for the Champions League final on May 25 can expect high price tags at the hotel check-in counter. According to a new survey from CheapRooms.co.uk, hotels in the British capital are skyrocketing in anticipation of the big game this Saturday. Indeed, some are charging as much as 700% or more than normal.

In total, about 85% of London hotels are already sold out for the final. In response to the shortage of available rooms, the remaining hotels are charging an average of 146% above regular rates for their vacancies. The biggest rate hikers are the Shaftsbury Metropolis, a 4-star accommodation near London Paddington, and Ascot Hyde Park Hotel, a budget hotel close to Kensington Gardens. Both are hitting out-of-town football fans with 700% increases over their usual rates.

According to Joan Mitchell from Cheaprooms.co.uk “No single event in London drove hotel rates higher in the city this past year. Even during the Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the popular New Year’s Eve celebration, hotel rates were substantially less exorbitant.”

Currently, to secure the cheapest available room in London, would-be guest will have to spend around GBP 250 per night on May 25. Committing to a 2- or 3-night stay, however, will drop the cost of some rooms to under GBP 200 per night.
