Top 10 European holiday hotspots: Best and worst fuel costs 2013

LONDON, England – Thinking of hiring a car this summer? Here are the top 10 holiday hotspots ranked based on fuel prices

A list of top 10 holiday hotspots is in order of fuel prices, letting holidaymakers who intend to hire a vehicle on their trip know where their money will go the furthest.

The top 10 European holiday destinations revealed are Spain (mainland), France, Italy, Portugal, Greece (mainland), Cyprus, Majorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Crete – but which are the cheapest to visit on a 2013 ‘fly-drive’ holiday?

Rank Country Petrol Diesel Average Fuel Cost
1 Tenerife EUR1.11 EUR1.02 EUR1.065
2 Lanzarote EUR1.12 EUR1.08 EUR1.100
3 Spain (mainland) EUR1.45 EUR1.36 EUR1.405
4 Cyprus EUR1.40 EUR1.42 EUR1.410
5 Portugal EUR1.51 EUR1.35 EUR1.430
6 France EUR1.59 EUR1.38 EUR1.485
7 Majorca EUR1.54 EUR1.45 EUR1.495
8 Greece (mainland) EUR1.72 EUR1.41 EUR1.565
9 Crete EUR1.83 EUR1.40 EUR1.615
10 Italy EUR1.85 EUR1.76 EUR1.805

Andy Hemmington of http://www.comparecarhire.co.uk says: “Breaking down these costs to popular destinations revealed that holidaymakers could spend nearly 70% more filling a hire car in Italy than Tenerife. We compiled this list to let them see where their money is going to go, allowing them to budget accordingly. However, although in Spain and some surrounding islands you can grab yourself a bargain, all the countries’ prices are similar to the UK cost so travellers aren’t in for a huge shock.”

With an exchange rate of €1.18 to each British pound, converted UK prices are €1.59 for petrol and €1.63 for diesel, giving an average fuel cost of €1.610. This would place them in 9th place out of a possible 11 if included in the chart.
