Manchester Airport strike ballot over pay

MANCHESTER, England – Unite, the union members working at Manchester Airport, are to be balloted for industrial action as pay talks break down.

The 200 workers involved in the strike ballot are Initial terminal cleaners based at Manchester Airport. Union members are angry after the company imposed a 2% pay deal previously rejected by workers.

If industrial action goes ahead, this could have massive impact on security at Manchester Airport. Unite wants Initial Air Services to return to negotiations to resolve the dispute and avoid any industrial action.

Unite organizer, Sharon Cowell said, “It is an insult that a profitable company like Initial is asking workers to accept wage deals that fail to reflect spiralling living costs.

“We are extremely disappointed that it has come to this and urge Initial Air Services to start negotiating seriously and give our members a decent pay offer they deserve.

“If strike action goes ahead and there are no cleaners on the terminals, this could lead to severe implications for security at the airport.”

Unite will announce the ballot results for strike action tomorrow on Thursday, June 26.
