BANGKOK, Thailand – About 100,000 tourists from China and Hong Kong are expected to visit Thailand during the Chinese New Year next month and they would generate approximately 4.2 billion baht in tourism revenue, Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) president Piyaman Techapaiboon said on Wednesday.

Ms Piyaman also said many foreign tourists have voiced their concerns about safety regarding the use of fireworks, about transportation problems, and inflated prices of goods and services.

She said Thailand must address these issues as well as other problems to better accommodate tourists and regain their confidence.

The government has to assign more immigration personnel to prevent delays that often occur at this time of the year, she added.

She emphasized the importance of the shuttle bus system at Don Mueang Airport, saying that an organisation needs to take charge and regulate it.

Sitpiwat Chiwarattanaporn, vice president of TCT, said that large numbers of tourists from the western hemisphere have yet to leave after spending the New Year here.

Mr Sitiwat also warned that there could be a shortage of immigration staff because of the the large number of tourists passing in and out.
