DENPASAR, Bali – A Singaporean tourist died suddenly while climbing Mount Batur on the resort island of Bali on Friday, police and a mountain guide said.

The tourist, identified as 40-year-old Suresh Perumal Ramaswamy, died as the group he was with reached a height of 500 meters above sea level, having walking about 1.5 kilometers from base camp, a local guide said on Friday.

โ€œHe had just climbed some 1.5 kilometers when he suddenly was unwell and could not be saved,โ€ said Jero Mukun, one of two guides who took Ramaswamy and five other Singaporeans up the volcano. The group left from Pura Jati on the southern slope of Mount Batur, which stands 1,717 meters above sea level.

A joint team from the local police and Baliโ€™s search and rescue agency took the body down amid heavy rains, bringing the deceased man to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

Adj. Comr. Ketut Wida, who heads the Kintamani subdistrict police, said the victim appeared to have died of fatigue.

โ€œThe victim is also said to have a history of heart problems,โ€ he added.

Wida said the climbing path taken by the group was the official route, but he also aired regret that some trekkers had decided to tackle the mountain despite the inclement weather.
