A wedding date to remember: while many of their compatriots used their last chance in this century to get married on a date as memorable as “12-12-12,” Claudia Ottemeier and Domenico Gallitano fled the freezing temperatures of Germany, where the German-Italian couple lives, and tied the knot in the Seychelles on the 12th of December 2012 at exactly 12:12 local time.

Only a month ago, the bride and groom had entered a contest organized by Air Berlin and the Seychelles Tourism Board, in which couples were asked to submit their applications if they wanted to get married on that very special day. As the lucky winners, they not only received free tickets but also five nights at L’Habitation des Cerfs to celebrate their wedding in style.

For a long time, the Seychelles have been a popular destination for European couples to get married, spend their honeymoon, or both. Whatever they spend on their trip, they can easily save in expenses for an elaborate wedding feast at home. All of the major hotels as well as many tour operators offer special deals for newlyweds, honeymooners, and even older couples celebrating a wedding anniversary. On top of that, many hotels offer special facilities for the ceremony and experienced staff to assist the couple. In some of the hotels, wedding arrangements are even offered at no extra charge, as long as the couple stays for a certain amount of nights at the hotel. Upon their return to Europe, all the newlyweds have to do is report their marriage to the local authorities, because weddings in the Seychelles are recognized in most EU countries.

For those who missed this year’s last magic date, there is 2020-02-02 or 22/2/22… but who wants to wait that long?
