(eTN) – Following Superstorm Sandy, a powerful Nor’easter is approaching New York and New Jersey from the Atlantic Ocean. New York’s Mayor Bloomberg has ordered the closure of parks and beaches, and many residents are evacuating the low-lying coastal areas. To date, evacuations have been ordered for the towns of Middletown and Brick in New Jersey, and in the Rockaways and Staten Island’s south shore in New York.

In a report from the National Weather Service, the forecast is calling for a mix of snow and rain from northern Maryland to central New England. Due to the effects from Superstorm Sandy, there is concern that strong winds could blow down already weakened trees, as well as pick up debris, causing dangerous conditions via airborne materials.

To ease traffic, the Holland Tunnel has been reopened for passage between Manhattan and New Jersey.
