Zanzibar to host international tourism conference

Experts from various countries worldwide will meet in Zanzibar later this month to discuss various issues on tourism industry in developing countries.

Experts from various countries worldwide will meet in Zanzibar later this month to discuss various issues on tourism industry in developing countries.

The International Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Developing Countries is being organised by the University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS), Marketing Department.

Addressing a news conference in Dar es Salaam, the Conference Coordinator, Dr John Philemon, said the meeting to take place on August 8 and 9, at Zanzibar Beach Resort would be opened by the Zanzibar Second Vice- President, Ambassador Seif Ali Idd.

“The aim of the conference is to deliberate on findings emanating from various researchers on matters pertaining to the industry, as well as practical experiences that will offer solutions to numerous problems facing the tourism industry in developing countries,” he explained.

The conference, according to Dr Philemon, will draw participants from Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Botswana, Israel, Nigeria, South Korea, Iran, Mexico, Sweden and United Kingdom. Other countries include Namibia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States and Germany.

With the theme: “Challenges in Tourism Development and Sustainability,” Dr Philemon said the outcome will go along way in transformation of the tourism sector. According to the researchers, tourism sector faces many challenges especially in respect of how the sector and alternative tourism products are managed to maximize the contribution to economic development and poverty alleviation without jeopardizing socio-cultural resources.
