AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – WYSE Travel Confederation, recognized as the authority on global youth and student travel, is calling for nominations for its second WYSE Volunteer & Travel Outstanding Volunteer Project Award competition, recognizing projects that better the community at large.
The award was created last year to showcase volunteer projects that exemplify sustainability, responsibility, and innovation. Last year’s winner was International Student Volunteers (ISV) San Juanillo Fishermen Association Support Project (Costa Rica,) which won out over dozens of international entries. The project helped promote sustainable development in this rural community where fishing is the main source of income.
Says Wagner Quirós, ISV Costa Rica Project Director, said: “We were full of pride to have won – it showed we were doing things the right way. But most importantly, the award acknowledges the most outstanding volunteer programs go above and beyond offering a great experience for the volunteers: they strive to achieve social, economic, institutional, and environmental outcomes that benefit the projects in the short and long term.”
WYSE is enthusiastic to promote this award because volunteer and travel projects are making a significant difference around the world. The award was created to acknowledge and raise the profile of the best current volunteering projects, as thinking and acting locally remain the first crucial step to making global change.
“People volunteer for endless reasons,” said Randy Skyes, founder of International Student Volunteers, “Because their efforts are given freely with the intention of bettering those around them, their actions help bind communities together. We would like to acknowledge that, by offering the winning organization the opportunity to receive greater public recognition and hopefully boost their support in future projects.”
Submissions are open to members and non-members alike. The winner will be announced in San Diego during the 2012 Global Youth Travel Awards at WYSTC, WYSE Travel Confederation’s annual global networking event. More information can be found here , and the online application form is here . All entries must be received by August 1, 2012.
