WYSE Travel Confederation’s Second App Yap Contest now open for submissions

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – WYSE Travel Confederation, the non-profit dedicated to promoting international youth travel, has officially launched its second App Yap Contest today on Facebook.

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – WYSE Travel Confederation, the non-profit dedicated to promoting international youth travel, has officially launched its second App Yap Contest today on Facebook. The competition challenges technology and travel companies to develop the best app in the youth travel industry, a lucrative global market worth US$136 billion a year.

Last year’s winner, the Vienna-based Tripwolf, which offers personal online travel guides in five languages, has seen a substantial increase in business since it won the award, which was announced at the World Youth & Student Travel Conference (WYSTC). This year, WYSTC, which is endorsed by the UNWTO and UNESCO, will be held in San Diego September 18-21.

“Since winning the App Yap contest, our guide downloads continued to increase to over 3 million. We have also successfully launched our first white label travel app for Tourism Tropical North Queensland and there are more coming in the next few months. WYSETC App Yap contest is a great opportunity to get your name known and to connect with industry partners,” said Tripwolf CEO Sebastian Heinzel.

WYSE expects the competition for this year’s contest to be healthy, reflecting the booming travel technology field. Last year, 40 international applicants from all business sectors competed, and WYSE hopes the numbers will climb as business recognizes the vitality of the travel app market. According to Juniper Research, revenue from mobile content and apps is expected to reach US$10 billion by 2015.

“Young people are always eager to push boundaries, whether we’re talking about travel or embracing technology,” said Marijn van der Veen, General Manager at ISIC (International Student Identity Card Association). “Having seen the uptake of the ISICBenefits App by ISIC cardholders, it’s evident we live in a different era of travel – young travellrs expect to have [a] wealth of information instantly at their fingertips. The ISIC App allows users to search for discounts worldwide and find those benefits that are geographically closest to them at that point in time.”

The App Yap contest is posted on Facebook and runs until July 23. It is open to all; however, only one app submission is permitted per company. The winning app must be suitable to use before, during, or after traveling and should be aimed at young individuals (under 35 years old.)

WYSETC judges will pick the top ten submissions and ask the Facebook public for its vote before selecting the ultimate winner. The App Yap winner will receive a prize worth over US$5,000, including 2 passes for WYSTC 2013 and a dedicated online marketing campaign.
