LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe today announced certification of the BEST WESTERN PREMIER Hotel Kaiserhof in Vienna, Austria. The property is the first hotel in Austria to receive the internationally-renowned Green Globe Certificate.

In addition, the hotel offers information about its “green” procedures in a brochure for guests, and a sustainability management book explains procedures and responsibilities in detail, providing transparency for employees and customers. Rooms feature information about responsible use of towels and air conditioning, which automatically turns off when windows are opened. With its central location in the city center, the hotel also encourages the use of public transportation, offers tickets for tram lines, suggests the use of bikes and electronically-operated cabs, and provides discounted public transportation passes to employees.

When the hotel was built in 1896 on the former “Glacis Grounds,” it ranked as one of the most modern hotels of its day, offering such novel conveniences (for the time) as a guest elevator, central heating, electricity, and running water in all rooms. Due to the close friendship between the building owner and Archduchess Marie Therese, the latter convinced her brother-in-law, Kaiser Franz Joseph, to approve naming the hotel “Kaiserhof.” In 1913, the hotel was already recommended by Baedeker’s Austria-Hungary, one of the very first travel guides.
In 1974, KR Dr. Ludwig and Elisabeth Richard took over the hotel. Since 1983, it has been a member of the BEST WESTERN Reservation System, which has resulted in a significantly higher percentage of guests from the USA.
