Harnas — A 22-year-old Norwegian woman was attacked and injured by a hungry cheetah on the Harnas game farm, situated some 112 kilometres east of Gobabis in the Omaheke Region.

Farm Harnas tames wildlife for conservation and rehabilitation purposes.

Kristel Johanson, who was on a morning tour with eight other people, got out of the tour vehicle to assist tour guide Joshua Shilongo to feed the cheetahs, when one of the cheetahs scratched her on her upper-right thigh, injuring her slightly.

Her jeans shorts were torn in the attack and her leg was covered in blood from the wound.

Johanson, however, continued the tour with other visitors who were desperate to see lions, wild dogs and leopards kept on the farm.

This Nampa reporter was part of the tour group and witnessed the attack.

Shilongo explained to Nampa after the tour that Johanson was attacked because she turned her back on a hungry cheetah.

“Never turn your back on a cheetah, otherwise you will be dead,” he warned.

He then urged all inhabitants of Namibia to learn to live in harmony with wild animals.

Shilongo said that on Farm Harnas people live in harmony with cheetahs, lions, wild dogs, leopards, monkeys and baboons.

He said that even the most dangerous carnivores like lions, have learnt to live alongside human beings at Farm Harnas.

“The same should apply to our people who can tame wildlife for business purposes,” he suggested. –
