Pegasus Airlines joins UN Global Compact corporate sustainability initiative

Turkish low-cost carrier, Pegasus Airlines, has become the first airline in Turkey to join the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. With this pledge, Pegasus has committed to implement its Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. The UN Global Compact calls upon signatories to comply with and implement ten core principles on environmental and social issues fundamental to driving balanced and sustainable growth of the global economy; to invest in people and the planet, and by doing so, to also support the UN in reaching its โ€œSustainable Development Goalsโ€.

Commenting on its pledge, Pegasus Airlines CEO Mehmet T. Nane, said: โ€œFostering the growth of the global economy in a balanced and sustainable way is the primary duty of companies across all sectors. While doing so, it is essential to uphold such fundamental principles on environmental and social issues as respecting human rights, non-discrimination and environmental awareness. By joining the UN Global Compact, as Pegasus Airlines, we pledge to comply with the Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. We are proud to be the first airline in Turkey to do soโ€.

By signing the UN Global Compact, Pegasus has pledged to comply with its Ten Principles which are:

Human Rights

โ— Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

โ— Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Labor

โ€ข Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

โ€ข Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;

โ€ข Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and

โ€ข Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

โ€ข Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;

โ€ข Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and

โ€ข Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

โ€ข Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
