TUMON, Guam – The Guam Power Authority announced the completion of its Tumon Lighting Project on December 7, 2011. The agency installed energy-efficient lighting for the island’s tourism capital. In addition to making the area safer, visitors can continue to enjoy Guam’s pleasant evenings and exciting nightlife along the tourist strip.

GPA, along with contractor Johnson Controls Inc., conducted a retrofit upgrade of one-to-one replacement to energy-efficient technology lighting along Pale San Vitores Road in Tumon. The project spanned five weeks from October to November with 520 lighting fixtures being replaced.

The brighter lights can be seen between the GVB office and the Westin Resort Guam. The efforts of utilizing higher efficiency lighting in order to maximize cost savings is a joint government of Guam project involving the Department of Public Works, Governor’s Office, Guam Energy Office, GVB, and GPA.

According to GPA Communications Manager, Artemio Perez, the use of the higher-efficiency technology equates to a 54 percent reduction in energy over the use of the old lighting technology. In a press release, Flores stated that GovGuam will realize approximately US$3 million in fuel savings annually on the project alone.

“Not having ample lighting in our tourism district was of great concern to GVB,” General Manager Joann Camacho said, “We are pleased with the replacement of all streetlights that will keep our visitors and patrons safe. We also thank our partners Guam Power Authority, Guam Energy Office, Department of Public Works, and Johnson Controls for making this a top priority and congratulate them for bringing this to reality.”

With evening temperatures hovering around 78 degrees, the Tumon area is now even more attractive to visitors who like to shop, dine, and be entertained into the night.
