Royal luxury at Bali’s Royal Pita Maha Resort

“Serenity awaits you in the Ubud hinterland,” reads the brochure, but first-time visitors to the Royal Pita Maha Resort will rather be aroused by feelings of awe and wonder than calm.

“Serenity awaits you in the Ubud hinterland,” reads the brochure, but first-time visitors to the Royal Pita Maha Resort will rather be aroused by feelings of awe and wonder than calm. This is a place even a jaded traveler could not forget.

It is indeed awesome, wonderful, stunning – and that just describes its looks. It could also be called celestial, heavenly, divine, since it is located in Kedewatan, a village of spiritual gravitas northwest of Ubud’s center. It definitely lives up to the expectations from this environmental heritage.

The Royal Pita Maha is owned and managed by Ubud’s royal family. It has been designed in strict adherence to the Tri Hata Karana concept of harmony and respect between the gods, mankind, and nature. With utmost sensitivity to the lush tropical forest, only 52 villas, a Royal House, and a few service buildings and pavilions, all built in traditional Balinese style, were integrated into a vast land area of 18 hectares. They blend beautifully and harmoniously with the raw and untouched environment on the left bank of the Ayung River.

Each villa compound has a personal infinity pool in a private garden footprint of 300 square meters. The valley views are breathtaking, especially early in the morning when the mist rises slowly from the river. Life here is sheer luxury or rather royal luxury: live like a king or queen, feel like a king or queen! The resort has three bars and three restaurants, including Ayung Organic, which serves healthy food and beverages with produce from the resort’s own organic farm. Three large swimming pools beckon, one of which is a holy spring water pool, another a 73-meter-long lagoon, allowing guests to float leisurely next to the fast-flowing Ayung River.

Outstanding MICE facilities are another prime feature of the resort. Apart from a reception hall for up to 200 guests and various conference rooms, there is a traditional Balinese court yard with an open-air stage and two flanking orchestra pavilions, which certainly makes it one of Bali’s most charming meeting venues. This complex is located in a remote area of the resort in order not to disturb other guests. Elsewhere there are facilities for meetings of a different kind: a wedding chapel, the Ayung River Gazebo, and others places to celebrate true love in style.

The spiritual aspect of the Royal Pita Maha is embodied in the Royal Wellness and Healing Center. This is definitely not an ordinary run-of-the-mill spa. The center is housed in a dedicated sanctuary to provide tranquility and nurture body, mind, and soul. It offers primarily yoga and meditation guidance, as well as a wide range of traditional Balinese healing and rejuvenation therapies. There is also a solitary meditation pavilion where guests can listen to the sound of the rushing Ayung waters and contemplate their inner life.

The Royal Pita Maha is majestic. It is a very private place of royal luxury where guests are treated liked royalty the Balinese way – from the heart. And yes, serenity will easily be attained there, too.
