Jakarta Fashion Week 2012: towards the biggest fashion fiesta in Indonesia

The goal to establish

The goal to establish Jakarta and Indonesia as one of the reputable fashion centers in Asia is within reach as the metropolitan capital is about to hold the biggest and most spectacular fashion festival in Indonesia: the Jakarta Fashion Week 2012.

Held for the 4th year, it is scheduled to take place at Pacific Place, one of Jakartaโ€™s most prestigious malls, from November 12-18, 2011. The series of events incorporates 51 shows and features over 2,000 outfits, the finest of Indonesiaโ€™s and international brands.

โ€œWe are proud that JFW [Jakarta Fashion Week] has been acknowledged to set the standard of fashion trends in Indonesia. For the shows, we have collaborated with ASEAN designers who have made their mark in the global fashion scene,โ€ stated Svida Alisjahbana, Chairperson of JFW 2012. Incorporated in the opening show entitled โ€œAlliance of Beauty,โ€ these ASEANโ€™s finest designers are: Biyan Wanaatmadja from the exclusive brand of Biyan and Biyan Bride from Indonesia, Ashley Isham from Singapore with his glamorous yet contemporary tailoring and drapery techniques, Malaysiaโ€™s Bernard Chandran who revolutionized designing lines which are adored by the royal Malaysian family and international celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Tori Amos, and Tube Gallery from Thailand with their semi-couture touch on ready-to-wear outfits which can be illustrated as fun, edgy, and dynamic creations.

To further introduce Indonesiaโ€™s fashion to the international scene and to provide global inspirations to the fiesta, the organizing committee has also invited renowned international designers. โ€œFor the collection from Germany and Berlin Fashion Week, we have collaborated with the Goethe Institute. The Embassy of Mexico has also contributed in bringing their designers, Pineda Covalin. Through the help of the British Council, we have also managed to bring Justin Smith from England,โ€ added Svida. The excitement of JFW will also be enhanced and transmitted worldwide by the Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and TV stations from Germany.

From the national scene, Ikatan Perancang Mode Indonesia (IPMI) or Indonesiaโ€™s Fashion Designers Association this year will present a show entitled โ€œColor Me Life,โ€ in dedication to one of Indonesiaโ€™s renowned designers and senior member of IPMI, Robby Tumewu, who is currently critically ill. The show itself will feature multiple creations from 10 top designers of Indonesia.

One of the most anticipated features at this yearโ€™s Jakarta Fashion Week is the iconic Fashion Designer Competition (Lomba Perancang Mode /LPM). This reputable event has been credited as the most sought-after platform for designers who wish to launch their careers. This year, the juries include fashion designers Musa Widyatmodjo and Priyo Oktaviano (both LPM alumni) alongside Syahmedi Dean (pop culture expert), Petty S. Fatimah (Editor in Chief of Femina Magazine), and Zornia Devi (Editor in Chief of Grazia Indonesia) who have shortlisted 10 finalists out of hundreds of hopeful applicants.

Jakarta Fashion Week 2012 was preceded by various programs and activities aimed to improve Indonesiaโ€™s fashion industry. Aside from holding workshops with leading Italian fashion institute, Istituto Marangoni, Jakarta Fashion Week model auditions were also held. Participated by over 200 models, the auditions sought to seek new talents in the Fashion model scene who will be included in the Jakarta Fashion Week 2012.

Jakarta Fashion Week is organized by event management company Azura Activation, a subsidiary of Femina Group, a publishing company, which since its founding in 1971, has been active in promoting the Indonesian fashion industry through various editorial initiatives and events.
