HONG KONG – Hotel ICON, the premier hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East, is officially open.

HONG KONG – Hotel ICON, the premier hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East, is officially open. Standing as a testament to design innovation, this landmark property features work from acclaimed local and international talents.

Since Hotel ICON represents forward-thinking design and features work from the industry’s most creative minds, the hotel celebrated its opening by hosting a Hospitality Design Conference.

Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the half-day conference on Wednesday, September 21, featured six of the acclaimed designers behind Hotel ICON.

Discussing the topic, “Boutique & Lifestyle Hotels: Creating a Brand Icon through Design,” the conference offered guests the chance to hear from six leaders in their respective fields.

“Hotel ICON is a collaborative project featuring work from award-winning artists, creative visionaries, and respected designers,” explained General Manager Richard Hatter, “To celebrate our official opening, we thought it appropriate to host a design conference and invite our panel of experts to gain an insight into their creative process.”

Audience members heard from French botanist and landscape artist Patrick Blanc, Hong Kong fashion designer Barney Cheng, Conran & Partners’ Managing Director Richard Doone, graphic artist Tommy Li, interior designer William Lim of CL3 Architects, and award-winning architect Rocco Lim of Rocco Design Architects Ltd.

Patrick Blanc produced the striking vertical garden in Hotel ICON’s lobby; Barney Cheng fashioned the staff uniforms; Conran & Partners oversaw the hotel’s two F&B outlets (The Market and Above & Beyond Chinese Restaurant); and Tommy Li created Hotel ICON’s distinctive, multi-layered logo.

As lead architect, Rocco Yim shaped the all-glass exterior and had the added challenge of integrating SHTM’s academic facilities and faculty members’ residences into the design. For Hotel ICON’s interiors, William Lim blends modern trends with traditional elements, reflecting the local culture and evoking a sense of contemporary elegance.

Although the conference marks Hotel ICON’s official opening, the property is already causing a buzz on the international design scene. The renowned design and lifestyle magazine, wallpaper*, included Hotel ICON in its 2011 list of the world’s Best Business Hotels.
