NEWPORT, R.I. – New England tourism officials are seeing opportunity in China as a booming economy there produces a larger middle class.
That middle class is venturing abroad, and tourist destinations from Rhode Island to Vermont want to be ready.
In Newport, tourism officials have signed an agreement with Bryant University students to have them translate tour scripts of famous city mansions into Mandarin, the common language of China.
Boston’s Massachusetts Bay Lines runs cruises focusing on the history of Boston Harbor for a handful of Chinese-language bus operators.
And Vermont’s Chamber of Commerce operates an office in the Chinese commercial hub of Shanghai. Officials say it’s a market they can no longer ignore.
