ISLAMABAD (eTN) – The Safety Investigation Board presented an investigation report of AirBlue Flight ABQ-202 to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday and briefed him in detail about the events that led to the unfortunate accident.

On July 28, 2010 at 9:40 am W, the 10-year old Airbus A321 aircraft, flown by Airblue since 2006, plunged into the Margalla Hills about 8 km from Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport after making an earlier unsuccessful attempt to land. The weather was torrential as it poured heavily enough to hamper rescue efforts and emergency relief operation. All 146 passengers and 6 crew were unfortunate to have boarded the flight as there were no survivors of what became the worst air disaster in Pakistan’s history.

The prime minister approved the dispatch of the investigation report for comments to the States of Manufacture and Design, which is a requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The comments are to be received within a period of 60 days. Gilani directed the authorities that while waiting for the comments, necessary safety related directives must be issued to all concerned to ensure the safety of lives and equipment.

He was also apprised on the progress of payment of compensation to the affected families. He expressed his concern on the slow pace of compensation and said that the process should be expedited to help the affected families.

Minister for Defense Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, Secretary of Defense Lt-Gen(retd) Thar Ali, Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Operations) Air Marshal Muhammad Hasan, Additional Secretary of Defense Maj-Gen Raja Arif Nazir, and DG CAA Air Marshal (retd) Khalid Chaudhry were also present on the occasion.

It may be mentioned that victims families held a press conference last week and demanded the report and added that a complete report must be submitted to the media. However, this report is still classified and access by victims’ families is yet not provided. AirBlue Flight ABQ-202 from Karachi to Islamabad crashed on July 28, 2010, with 152 people onboard, including 146 passengers and 6 crew members. No person onboard survived.
