(eTN) – The days of pumpkin, the party of the country kitchen in the upper valley Passiria (September/October) and the Masi (typical valley houses) of the area specializes in local cuisine.

The month of September, in the Merano, Sรผdtirol/Alto Adige area will feature several events that will have as its undisputed star the traditional cuisine of the region. The days of the pumpkin, September 23-25, will open the event in the center of Lana, a festival dedicated to the vegetable that marks the end of the summer season. During the three days, the variety of dishes that can be tasted will include: pumpkin, zucchini, and squash, or sweet Siamese and enjoy the variety of products sold in the stands prepared according to recipes of Tyrolean tradition and according to the dictates of the Mediterranean diet. The event include a varied program of cultural and musical activities, an exhibition of figures made with pumpkins, and the visitors can assist in the carving of it.

Three weekends in the High Passeiertal – September 23 to 25, September 30 to October 2, and October 7 to 9 – will be entirely dedicated to the peasant kitchen. Six local restaurants will be prepared to delight the palates of gourmets, from Friday to Sunday, presenting recipes from the culinary traditions of the alto-atesina region. Dumplings with porcini mushroom and butter, garden salad, gnocchi with ricotta cheese, noodles with venison sauce, trout with almond butter, and dumplings with jam strawberry applesauce are just some examples of the wide variety of dishes that will be proposed.

At the base of the gourmet event there is a strong respect for the nature and for the land of the natives very conscious of the culture and enhancement of local products. The use of raw materials from the area at “KM zero,” is felt especially in the kitchen, as witnessed by the existence of associations such as Gallo Rosso and โ€œMasi con Gustoโ€ (Masi, the temple of taste).

Much attention is also devoted to the marketing of local products, which are also sold in large and well-cared-for retail outlets, such as the Farmer’s Shop at the footstep of Venosta Valley and PUR Sรผdtirol shop that opened last year in the central district of Merano.

Worth mentioning are the 3 Masi in different parts of Merano city, which are reknown for their healthy cuisine and traditional draws of the natural products that grow locally, namely Schnalshuberhof Lagundo, with its vineyards and orchards cultivated according to biological criteria and the various “Stuben” placed under protection, along with the Zmai ler at Scena that offers a wonderful view over the Val d’Adige and includes some of the old Maso protected for their historical value.

Finally, we recall the Maso Oberniederhof in the Val Senales, which dates back more than 700 years and whose owners, the family Tappeiner, preserved it according to the criteria of the association. They also originated Bioland, a special cowshed, where they breed animals in danger of extinction, such as the “Tiroler Grauvieh,” the sheep “Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf,” and pigs “Schwรคbisch-Hรคllische Landschwein.”

Merano and its surroundings
Seen from above, Merano and its surroundings have the shape of a star in the center of which lies the city and whose rays are represented by the Val Venosta, Val Passiria, and Val d’Adige. Along these valleys lay beautiful villages whose main resource relies on tourism taking advantage of the particularities of the area: in fact, the life of the town meets the rural country, the Mediterranean flora melt with the Alpine and architectural styles. A cocktail of contrasts enriching tourism is offered year-round.

Over 6,000 beds are available throughout the area and complete the landscape of this region, able to satisfy every interest, providing various and different services and facilities, but whose common denominator is the high quality and attention to detail in every proposal.
