Frontier Airlines cuts, axes fees

Air travelers are used to airlines raising or adding fees, so they may be shocked to hear that one carrier is actually reducing some of them.

Frontier Airlines — which has hubs in Denver and Milwaukee, and flies to destinations in the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica — announced Wednesday what it called “guest-friendly” changes to its policy.

Passengers who fly on the carrier’s Economy fare — the cheapest option — and who want to make an itinerary change will now pay $50 for the privilege, down from $100, plus any difference in fare as long as they make the switch before the day of travel.

They will also get a $5 discount on the first checked bag fee if they check in online, reducing the fee from $20 to $15.

(Passengers who fly with Frontier’s more expensive fares — Classic and Classic Plus — will continue to be able to check two bags free.)

The airline is also getting rid of a flat fee for checked bicycles and will now treat them as standard baggage, so fliers with Classic or Classic Plus tickets can bring their bike as one of their two complimentary checked bags.

Name changes, which let another traveler use the ticket, will also now be allowed for $50 for passengers with Classic and Economy tickets. (Classic Plus fares allow the change for free.)

The changes are geared toward fliers “who value choice and clarity in their travel experience,” said Ian Arthur, Frontier’s vice president of marketing and branding.

The policy goes into effect for tickets purchased on or after Wednesday.
