Air Asia had applied for permission to operate flights to Nepal at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) about eight months ago. It had already been permitted to operate four flights a week from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.

The target passengers of the airlines are migrant workers, tourists as well as Nepalese students studying aboard. The cost of Air Asia tickets is comparatively lowers than other airlines, according to the GSA.

Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) statistics shows that about 10,000 Nepalese depart Malaysia entitled for construction and farm works each month. At least 400,000 Nepali migrant workers are working in Malaysia at present, according to estimates.
