When the iWantSun.co.uk website named Koh Kood as being among its top 10 summer destinations for 2011, it put the spotlight on a Thai beach destination that is still little known but which is very much up and coming.

Koh Kood is the last island in Trat Provinceโ€™s maritime territory before you cross over into Cambodian waters. The second largest island in Trat after Koh Chang, Koh Kood is relatively flat, with much of its interior either completely wild or given over to coconut and rubber tree plantations.

The island has superb beaches and crystal-clear water, and a number of small but high-quality resorts have sprung up in the past few years. The best-known of these is Away Koh Kood, part of the Centara Boutique Collection, a tiny resort with just 20 ocean-facing bungalows and 13 canvas retreat tents, yet which features five-star service.

โ€œKoh Kood has the advantage of being relatively remote while still being easy to access,โ€ said Chris Bailey, senior vice president – sales and marketing at Centara Hotels & Resorts.

โ€œVisitors fly to Trat or travel by road from Bangkok, and then the island is a one-hour boat journey from the mainland. Once they are here, among wonderfully natural surroundings, they find Kood is the perfect place to do nothing. Doing nothing while living in luxury is a dream we all have!โ€

Boating, diving, and island-hopping are, in fact, the favorite pursuits at Koh Kood, along with lazing in the sun, and Away Koh Kood features the largest activity and dive center on the island, named The Hub. Diving courses are given here by qualified instructors, and this is the place to organize an idyllic day exploring the tiny islands off the Trat coast.
