The cruise ship Clelia Ii is limping back to shore this morning after a high-seas nightmare. The ship, filled with American passengers, was en route to Argentina from the Antarctic when it was slammed by a monster wave.
The monster wave shattered windows, short circuited electrical systems, and damaged one of the ship’s engines. According to a statement released by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, “This caused a temporary loss of communications and affected engine performance. Both engines remained operational and speed was reduced.” In other reports, it was indicated that speed was reduced to 1 knot, the equivalent of approximately 1 mile per hour.
None of the 88 American passengers were injured, however, a crew member suffered minor injuries.
After another Antarctic cruise ship provided aid and repairs were completed, the ship is expected to arrive back in Argentina Thursday evening (December 9).
